in between. Venerable Ananda, considering that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and completely changing, I have said that all feelings are suffering. Venerable Ananda, however, conditioned phenomena gradually become peaceful, and gradually conditioned phenomena become peaceful. Gradually, conditioned phenomena cease individually, and gradually conditioned phenomena cease completely and individually. Venerable, how do conditioned phenomena gradually become peaceful, and how do conditioned phenomena gradually become peaceful? Venerable Ananda, when one enters the first dhyana, speech becomes peaceful. When one enters the second dhyana, conceptualization and discernment become peaceful. When one enters the third dhyana, joy becomes peaceful. When one enters the fourth dhyana, exhalation and inhalation become peaceful. When one enters the cessation of perception and feeling, conditioned phenomena and feeling become peaceful. Venerable Ananda, in this way, conditioned phenomena gradually become peaceful, and gradually become peaceful. Venerable, in this way, conditioned phenomena gradually become peaceful, and gradually conditioned phenomena become peaceful. Venerable, how do conditioned phenomena gradually cease individually, and how do conditioned phenomena gradually cease completely and individually? Venerable Ananda, when one enters the first dhyana, speech ceases individually, and so forth, until when one enters the cessation of perception and feeling, perception and feeling cease individually. Venerable Ananda, in this way, conditioned phenomena gradually cease individually, and conditioned phenomena gradually cease individually. Venerable Ananda, among these cessations, there are six kinds of cessation: the supreme cessation, the particularly excellent cessation, the unsurpassed cessation, the unequaled cessation, the cessation that surpasses other cessations, entering into the unsurpassed, entering into the transcendent, and entering into the marvelous.

Beginning with "Among those," what is the sixth that is individual cessation from the individual cessation of another, the unsurpassed entry, the past entry, the wondrous entry? Venerable Ananda, here, a bhikkhu's mind becomes detached from desire and liberated from desire, and the mind becomes detached from hatred and ignorance and liberated. Venerable Ananda, this is the individual cessation from those individual cessations, the individual cessation from the individual cessation of another, the unsurpassed entry, the past entry, the sixth that is the wondrous entry. The Perfectly Complete Buddha, with profound wisdom, knowing the nature of impermanence of all phenomena, and the nature of complete change, proclaimed that feeling is suffering. Any diligent bhikkhu who does not abandon mindfulness, he fully knows all these feelings, he is the wise one. Having fully known the feelings, there is no defilement in the Dharma that is seen. When the aggregates are destroyed, wisdom obtains the number of extinction. Thus it was said. Furthermore, it is said that pleasant feeling should be regarded as the nature of suffering. The occasion for this was in Shravasti. Bhikkhus, there are these three feelings: what are the three? Namely, pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful. Bhikkhus, in this regard, pleasant feeling should be regarded as suffering. Painful feeling should be regarded as a thorn. Feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful should be regarded as impermanent and of the nature of complete change. Bhikkhus, any bhikkhu who sees pleasant feeling as suffering, painful feeling as a thorn, and feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful as impermanent and of the nature of complete change, bhikkhus, this bhikkhu is said to have truly seen well. The Teacher further declared: Whoever sees pleasure as suffering, likewise sees suffering as a thorn, and sees neither pleasure nor pain as of the nature of impermanence, that bhikkhu sees truly, touches the state of peace and tranquility, and having destroyed self-grasping, will conquer the army of Mara. Thus it was said. Also, as it is said
