Having manifested, approached, and abided closely, this is said to be the eighth liberation. It is called "Eight Overcoming Bases." Among them, it comes from the verses derived from the eighth, which is the fourth sutra of the seventh chapter. In the first chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, there is also a verse that says, "Likewise, others should be as appropriate." Similarly, one should also refer to where it is written as "Six Overcoming Bases." It is called "Ten Exhaustion Bases," among which, it comes from the verses derived from the tenth, which is the third chapter, and from the end of the tenth sutra of the Samyakpatha. Similarly, in the summary of the first chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, one should also refer to where it is written as "Likewise, all Exhaustion Bases." In the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa called "Near Necessity," the eighth chapter is mostly combined with the sutras, and it is complete here. Thus, what does the Blessed One mean by saying that "form is not self"? The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Monks, if past and future forms are not self, then what need is there to mention the present forms? Monks, the noble disciple who has seen the truth in this way becomes indifferent to past forms, does not rejoice in future forms, and becomes disgusted and detached from present forms. Monks, if feelings, perceptions, volitions, and consciousness, past and future, are not self, then what need is there to mention the present ones? Monks, the noble disciple who has seen the truth in this way becomes indifferent to past forms, does not rejoice in future forms, and becomes disgusted and detached from present forms. Thus it was said. Consciousness arises in dependence on two things, which is extracted from the collection of the six sources. Also, in the fifth chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, one should contemplate the past and the future, and thus the distinctions are explained. In the third chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, when discussing dependent origination, one should refer to the written distinctions of the limb of contact. Similarly, monks.

Regarding the statement, "depending on the eye as the cause and form as the condition." The setting is in Shravasti. Then, another monk went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, that monk said this to the Blessed One: Venerable, with what as the cause and what as the condition does eye consciousness arise? Venerable, with what as the cause and what as the condition do ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness arise? Monk, depending on the eye as the cause and form as the condition, eye consciousness arises. Why is that? Because any eye consciousness, whatever it may be, arises depending on the eye and form. Depending on the ear as the cause and sound as the condition, ear consciousness arises. Why is that? Because any ear consciousness, whatever it may be, arises depending on the ear and sound. Monks, depending on the nose as the cause and smell as the condition, nose consciousness arises. Why is that? Because any nose consciousness, whatever it may be, arises depending on the nose and smell. Depending on the tongue as the cause and taste as the condition, tongue consciousness arises. Why is that? Because any tongue consciousness, whatever it may be, arises depending on the tongue and taste. Depending on the body as the cause and touch as the condition, body consciousness arises. Why is that? Because any body consciousness, whatever it may be, arises depending on the body and touch. Depending on the mind as the cause and phenomena as the condition, mind consciousness arises. Why is that?

This comes from the seventh and eighth chapters, in the second section of this 'Abhidharmakośa', it says: 'In the unconditioned, there are none of these.' One should look at where it is written like this. The words of the sutra are as follows: A Brahmin by the name of, the Blessed One, having traveled from the land of the heroes, arrived at Tala, and resided in the forest of Tala. The Brahmin of Tala, the great Sala tree, heard that the ascetic Gautama, having traveled from the land of the heroes, arrived at Tala, and resided in the forest of Tala. Having heard this, he rode on a chariot of pure white mares, carrying a golden staff and a round alms bowl, surrounded by a crowd of youths, with the crowd of youths in front, he came out of the forest of Tala to see and attend to the Blessed One. As far as the chariot could go, he went by chariot, and where the chariot could not go, he entered the Joyful Garden on foot, and went near to where the Blessed One was. Having gone near, he spoke with the Blessed One various kinds of words that brought great joy and great happiness, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Brahmin of Tala, the great Sala tree, said this to the Blessed One: Gautama, in order to create an opportunity to answer questions, I would like to ask you a few questions. Brahmin, ask as you wish. Gautama, these five faculties are different in their objects, different in their spheres, each experiencing their own objects and spheres, and not experiencing the objects and spheres of others, namely the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty. What kind of objects and spheres do these faculties experience? And what do these faculties rely on? Brahmin, these five faculties are different in their objects, different in their spheres, each experiencing their own objects and spheres, and not experiencing the objects and spheres of others, namely the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty. These faculties experience the objects of the mind, and these faculties are the mind.
