It was also said that it is a samadhi without distractions, a samadhi without conceptualization or investigation. It was also said that regarding the samadhi of emptiness, the origin of the story is in Shravasti. There are three types of samadhi: the samadhi of emptiness, the samadhi of signlessness, and the samadhi of wishlessness. It was also said that the path, like a raft, must be abandoned without hesitation. For example, the Ganges River is full and overflowing, with the water level only high enough for a crow to drink. Without a boat or raft, it is impossible to cross the current, against the current, this shore, and the other shore. Someone collects grass, wood, branches, leaves, etc., and makes a raft. Relying on and abiding on the raft, using both hands to row, one can reach the other shore. After thinking like this, collect grass, wood, branches, leaves, etc., and make a raft. Relying on and abiding on the raft, rowing with both hands from the current against the current, one can smoothly reach the other shore. Then, this person thinks: This raft has helped me a lot. I relied on and abided on this raft, and rowing with both hands from the current against the current, I smoothly crossed to the other shore. I should carry this raft on my head or shoulders, and then go wherever I want to go. Monks, what do you think? This person thinks that the raft has helped him a lot. Thinking like this, he carries the raft on his head or shoulders, and then goes to the place he wants to go? No, venerable ones. Then, this person thinks: This raft has indeed helped me a lot. I relied on and abided on this raft, and rowing with both hands from the current against the current, I smoothly crossed to the other shore, but I should leave this raft on the shore or put it in the stream. So, he leaves the raft on the shore or puts it in the stream, and then goes according to the place he wants to go. Monks, what do you think? Is this person doing what should be done by treating the raft in this way?

Venerable ones, it is just so. Monks, similarly, the Dharmas I have taught are for the purpose of crossing over (samsara), not for the purpose of grasping. Monks, therefore, having understood the categories of Dharma I have taught, which are like a raft, you should abandon even the Dharma, just as you would abandon what is not Dharma. This is from the verses of the Samyukta Agama, the second auspicious sutra. It is called "Three Doors of Immaculate Liberation." Wherein, the introduction is in Shravasti. The doors of liberation are of three kinds. What are the three? The doors of liberation are emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Thus it is said. Furthermore, there is the saying, "Three Samadhis," wherein the introduction is in Shravasti. Furthermore, there are three samadhis. What are the three? The samadhi of emptiness of emptiness, the samadhi of signlessness of signlessness, and the samadhi of wishlessness of wishlessness. Thus it is said. Again, there is the saying, "Four kinds of Samadhi Meditation," wherein the introduction is in Shravasti. There are four kinds of samadhi meditation. What are the four? If one cultivates and practices samadhi meditation, doing it frequently, one will abide in comfort in the visible Dharma; if one cultivates and practices samadhi meditation, doing it frequently, one will know and see; if one cultivates and practices samadhi meditation, doing it frequently, wisdom will arise; if one cultivates and practices samadhi meditation, doing it frequently, one will exhaust the defilements. What is it that if one cultivates and practices samadhi meditation, doing it frequently, one will abide in comfort in the visible Dharma? Here, a monk fills, expands, and pervades this body with the joy and pleasure born of seclusion. Just as the joy and pleasure born of seclusion pervades this body, there is no part of this body that is not pervaded, but it abides completely pervaded. For example, a bather or a skilled disciple of a bather, having put fine bath powder into a copper basin, earthenware basin, or fish-skin basin, mixes it with water, so that it is wet inside and out,

Just as walking on the earth, both inside and outside are pervaded by moisture, and it does not become thin or scattered, so here, a monk is called this body, just like before. This is because if meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, one will abide in comfort in the visible Dharma. If meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, what will be understood and seen? Here, a monk holds the perception of light well, remembers it well, manifests it well, and practices it. Just as day is like night, just as night is like day, just as before is like after, just as after is like before, just as above is like below, just as below is like above. Like this, may my mind not become a form of darkness, not forcing the mind, practicing the mind that is accompanied by light, without obscuration. This is because if meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, it will be understood and seen. If meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, what will cause wisdom to fully discern? Here, a monk knows the arising of feelings and also truly knows the arising of feelings, knows the abiding of feelings and also truly knows the abiding of feelings, and truly knows the non-appearance, complete cessation, and complete extinction. He, with mindfulness, truly knows thought, and also truly knows the arising of discrimination, truly knows the abiding, and truly knows the non-appearance, complete cessation, and complete extinction. He is also with mindfulness, not without mindfulness. This is because if meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, it will cause wisdom to fully discern. If meditation is fully practiced and repeatedly practiced, what will cause the outflows to be exhausted? This is because a monk observes and abides in the arising and destruction of the five aggregates of clinging. This is form, this is the arising of meditation, this is the non-appearance of form, this is feeling, this is thought, this is
