Moreover, due to the condition of name and form, the six sense bases arise. Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila, is name and form made by oneself? Or is it made by another? Or is it made by both oneself and another? Name and form are not made by oneself, nor made by another, but arise without a cause. Venerable Śāriputra, name and form are not made by oneself, nor made by another, nor are they made by both oneself and another, name and form are not made by oneself, nor made by another, but arise without a cause, it is not so, but due to the condition of consciousness, name and form arise. Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila, is consciousness made by oneself? Or is it made by another? Or is it made by both oneself and another? Or is consciousness not made by oneself, nor made by another, but arises without a cause. Venerable Śāriputra, consciousness is not made by oneself, nor made by another, nor is it made by both oneself and another, consciousness is not made by oneself, nor made by another, but arises without a cause, it is not so, but due to the condition of name and form, consciousness arises. Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila, how can the former be related to the latter, and the latter to the former? Thus, Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila said: Venerable Śāriputra, name and form are not made by oneself, nor made by another, nor are they made by both oneself and another, name and form are not made by oneself, nor made by another, but arise without a cause, it is not so. But due to the condition of consciousness, name and form arise. Having said so, now it is said that due to the condition of name and form, consciousness arises, the meaning of what Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila said is not understood, how should the meaning of what Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila said be viewed? Therefore, Venerable Śāriputra, wise beings will understand the meaning of what is said through examples, listen to an example for a moment. For example, if two reed stalks are taken, relying on each other, connecting with each other, relying on each other and abiding, if one of them is taken away, the other will fall down, just like that.

Then, the Venerable Shariputra said, "These two Venerables are interdependent, interconnected, and rely on each other to exist. That is, conditioned by consciousness is name and form, and conditioned by name and form is consciousness." Venerable Mahakashyapa, as you have shown, those who are learned, well-versed in the teachings, subdue their minds, are fearless, unafraid of death, and who have realized the realm of immortality with their bodies and abide therein, analyze in detail with correct wisdom such profound questions and make predictions. Well said, well said! Venerable Mahakashyapa, those wise practitioners of pure conduct revere you like wearing a crown on their heads, and those who come to behold you and serve you have truly gained great benefit! We too have gained great benefit, for we have come to behold Venerable Mahakashyapa, and not only have we gained the benefit of serving, but Venerable Mahakashyapa has also expounded the categories of the Dharma to us thirty, and I am very pleased, praise, and rejoice in this. If Venerable Mahakashyapa can preach to the Sangha the Dharma of renouncing old age and death, detachment, and cessation, then he can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. Regarding birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, the six sense bases, name and form, and consciousness, if one can preach the Dharma of renunciation, detachment, and cessation, then one can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. Venerable Mahakashyapa, if the Sangha can generate renunciation and detachment towards old age and death, and realize cessation, then one can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. From then on, as before, if one can generate renunciation and detachment towards consciousness, and realize cessation, then one can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. Venerable Mahakashyapa, if the Sangha can generate renunciation and detachment towards old age and death, realize cessation, and without clinging to anything, attain liberation of the mind from the defilements, then one can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. Venerable Mahakashyapa, if the Sangha can generate renunciation and detachment towards birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, the six sense bases, name and form, and consciousness, realize cessation, and without clinging to anything, attain liberation of the mind from the defilements, then one can be called a speaker of the Dharma among the Sangha. Thus spoke the Blessed One, and the Venerable Shariputra expressed great admiration for the Blessed One's teachings.
