The aggregate of consciousness is designated by cause and condition. Why is that? Because all aggregates of consciousness, whatever they may be, are conditioned by name and form. Venerable, well said! As before. Venerable, what is the taste of form? What is the fault? What is the escape? What is the taste of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness? What is the fault? What is the escape? Bhikshu, whatever arises as pleasure and joy dependent on form, this is called the taste of form. Whatever form is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, this is the fault of form. Whatever subdues desire and attachment to form, abandons desire and attachment, and completely transcends desire and attachment, this is the escape from form. Whatever feeling, perception, formation, whatever arises as pleasure and joy dependent on consciousness, this is called the taste of consciousness. Whatever consciousness is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, this is the fault of consciousness. Whatever subdues desire and attachment to consciousness, abandons desire and attachment, and completely transcends desire and attachment, this is the escape from consciousness. Venerable, well said! Thus, that bhikshu rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said. Venerable, to what extent does the term 'self' apply? Bhikshu, an uneducated ordinary person truly sees form as self, or that the self possesses form, or that the self is in form, or that form is in the self. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are self. The self possesses consciousness, or that the self is in consciousness, or that consciousness is in the self. Bhikshu, to this extent does the term 'self' apply. Venerable, well said! As before. Venerable, to what extent does the term 'self' not apply? Bhikshu, a noble disciple who is learned

and does not truly see, "Form is me," and "I possess form," and "In form is me, in me is form." And does not truly see, "Feeling," "perception," "mental formations," "consciousness" are me. I possess consciousness, in me is consciousness, in consciousness is me. Bhikkhu, just this much is not called "me." Venerable one, well said! As before. Venerable one, if one knows and sees in this way, then immediately the defilements will be extinguished. Bhikkhu, here, whatever form, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent, far or near, all of that is not mine, nor am I theirs, nor are they mine. Seeing and fully understanding with correct wisdom as it is. Bhikkhu, here, whatever feeling, whatever perception, whatever mental formations, whatever consciousness, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent, whether near or far, all of those are not mine, nor am I theirs, nor are they mine. Seeing and fully understanding with correct wisdom as it is. Bhikkhu, if one knows and sees in this way, then immediately the defilements will be extinguished. Then, another bhikkhu, unskilled, immersed in the shell of the egg of ignorance, having abandoned the teaching of the blind, gathered in that assembly, gathered and sat, and such a sinful view arose: Form is not me, feeling is not me, perception is not me, mental formations are not me, consciousness is not me, if there is no me, then how will I experience what is done by no me? Then, the Blessed One, knowing the mind of that bhikkhu with his mind, called out to the bhikkhus, saying: Bhikkhus, if a foolish person, immersed in the shell of the egg of ignorance, having abandoned the teaching of the blind, gathers in this assembly, gathers and sits, some think that form is me.

Is not me. Feeling is not me. Perception is not me. Formation is not me. Consciousness is not me. If consciousness is not me, then how can I experience the karma created by non-self? Such a form of sinful view arises, and there is a place for complete inquiry. Monks, I shall tame you. Monks, it is like this, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it suffering or not suffering? Venerable, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent and suffering, having the nature of change, a noble disciple who is endowed with hearing, would he regard it as 'This is me,' 'These are mine,' 'I am these,' and 'Those are my self'? Venerable, no. Monks, what do you think? Are feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness permanent or impermanent? Venerable, they are impermanent, from here onwards, like before, up to 'would he regard it?' Venerable, no. Monks, therefore, whatever form, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or excellent, far or near, all of that is not mine, nor am I of those, nor are those my self. From here onwards, as before, one should observe with correct wisdom as it is. Whatever feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, from here onwards, up to 'one should observe with correct wisdom as it is.' Monks, a noble disciple who sees in this way, endowed with hearing, is liberated from form, and from feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation, I say he is completely liberated from suffering. When this discourse on the Dharma was spoken, many monks were freed from clinging, and their defilements were exhausted.
