Birth is exhausted. The pure conduct has been practiced. What needed to be done has been done. What should be done has been done. There is no other to be known in this existence, such a prophecy would be beautiful. Does Devadatta not teach the Dharma to the monks in this way? It is not the venerable Śāriputra. Then, the venerable Śāriputra called out to the monks: Venerable ones, why does a monk conquer mind with mind, and the mind is free from desire? Free from hatred, free from delusion, being of the nature of non-attachment, being of the nature of non-hatred, being of the nature of non-delusion, and being of the nature of non-regression in the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, that monk prophesies: My birth is exhausted. The pure conduct has been practiced. What needed to be done has been done. What should be done has been done. There is no other to be known in this existence, thus it is said to be beautiful. 'There is another' is said in the treatise, that is, in the treatise on the aggregate of consciousness, and in it, such as 'with a non-corresponding mind,' and such as 'with a mind to be abandoned by seeing,' the two are extensively expounded from the sixth breath called 'object of focus.' In the sutra, these five aggregates of grasping are said to be the root of the seventh. The Blessed One was staying in the Eastern Park of Śrāvastī, in the Deer Mother's Hall. Then, the Blessed One arose from correct contemplation in inner thought, descended from the cool chamber, and in the shade of the cool chamber, with the Sangha of monks in front, sat on the prepared seat. Having sat, the Blessed One made this special declaration. Monks, there are five aggregates of grasping. What are the five? They are the aggregate of grasping of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and the aggregate of grasping of consciousness. Then, another monk rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, prostrated to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. Venerable one, there are five aggregates of grasping. What are the five?

Then, the aggregates of form for grasping, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness for grasping. Therefore, Bhikshu, sit down, and having sat down, ask as you wish. Then, that Bhikshu bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head and sat down on one side. He said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, there are five aggregates for grasping. What are the five? The aggregates of form for grasping, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness for grasping. Bhikshu, it is so. It is so, Bhikshu, there are five aggregates for grasping: the aggregates of form for grasping, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness for grasping. Venerable One, well said, that Bhikshu was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said. Again, he asked the Blessed One a question: Venerable One, what is the root of these aggregates for grasping? What is their origin? What is their arising? What is the nature of their condition? Bhikshu, these five aggregates for grasping have desire as their root. They arise from desire, are similar to desire, and arise from desire. Venerable One, well said, that Bhikshu was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said. Again, he asked the Blessed One a question: Venerable One, is the aggregate itself the aggregate for grasping? Or is there another aggregate for grasping other than the aggregates? Bhikshu, the aggregate itself is not the aggregate for grasping, nor are the aggregates and other than the aggregates the aggregate for grasping. However, it is the desire of craving. This alone is called grasping. Venerable One, well said, that Bhikshu was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said. Again, he asked the Blessed One a question: Venerable One, can a designation be found to distinguish the aggregates from the aggregates? The Blessed One replied: Bhikshu, it can be found. For example, some people may think in the future, how wonderful it would be if I had such a form.

I, in the future, may I possess such feelings, possess such conceptions, possess such formations, possess such consciousness, even if it becomes like this, there is nothing wrong with that. Bhikshu, in this way, one can establish the distinction of aggregates. Venerable, well said. That bhikshu was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said, and then again asked the Blessed One: Venerable, how much is needed to become the term "aggregate, aggregate"? Bhikshu, here, whatever form, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or superior, far or near, all of them are gathered together and become the category called "aggregate." Feelings, conceptions, formations, consciousness, whatever it may be, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or superior, far or near, all of them are gathered together and become the category called "aggregate of consciousness." Bhikshu, only in this way can it become the term called "aggregate." Venerable, well said. That bhikshu was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said, and then again asked the Blessed One: Venerable, with what causes and what conditions is the aggregate of form established? Venerable, with what causes and what conditions are the aggregates of feeling, conception, formation, and consciousness established? Bhikshu, with the causes of the four great elements and the conditions of the four great elements, the aggregate of form is established. Why is that? Because whatever form, all of them are conditioned by the four great elements. With the cause of contact and the condition of contact, the aggregates of feeling, conception, and formation are established. Why is that? Because whatever aggregates of feeling, conception, and formation, all of them are conditioned by contact. Bhikshu, name and form...
