Sounds to be distinguished by the ear, smells to be distinguished by the nose, tastes to be distinguished by the tongue, tactile sensations to be distinguished by the body, as well as desires, suffering, joy, pleasantness, closeness to desire, and things that make one happy. Monks, these are the nature of what the world loves and the nature of attachment, which are called thorns in these Dharmas and Vinaya. Monks, in this way, noble hearers who possess learning become skilled and highly skilled in conduct and dwelling. Likewise, they will become skilled and highly skilled in conduct and dwelling. How should one conduct oneself and dwell so that the mind becomes free from worldly greed and displeasure, and from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, thereby freeing the mind from defilements? Monks, when a noble hearer conducts himself and dwells in this way, occasionally, once in a hundred times, due to forgetfulness, sinful and unwholesome thoughts arise, or closeness to desire arises, or closeness to hatred arises, or closeness to delusion arises. Monks, for a noble hearer who possesses learning, even if a small amount of forgetfulness occurs, it will quickly be exhausted and completely extinguished. For example, if someone were to sprinkle two or three small drops of water on a burning hot iron ball or iron mass, monks, as soon as the small drops of water fall, they will quickly be exhausted and completely extinguished. Monks, similarly, for a noble hearer who possesses learning, even if a small amount of forgetfulness occurs, it will quickly be exhausted and extinguished. Monks, when a noble hearer conducts himself and dwells in this way, kings or relatives come and say, 'Young men, why do you shave your heads, carry begging bowls in your hands, wander from house to house, and make your bodies suffer with these cold robes? Young men, you should enjoy desires to the fullest, give alms, and accumulate merit!' If they become attached to desires, monks, what do you think about this? Would kings or relatives have desires for a noble hearer who possesses learning?

If he is summoned for the sake of enjoying desires, will he abandon and destroy the precepts? No, bhikkhuni. A noble disciple who is endowed with hearing sees with correct wisdom, as it is, that all are of the nature of suffering, arising, non-appearance, taste, fault, and definite departure. He sees desires as like a heap of coals. When he sees desires in this way, knows desires as they are, and sees desires, he has no desire for desires, no attachment to desires, no delight in desires, no immersion in desires, no certainty in desires, no clinging to desires, and his mind completely turns away and does not abide in desires. He is skilled and very skilled in conduct and dwelling. When he is so skilled and very skilled in conduct and dwelling, how should he conduct himself and dwell so that his mind is free from worldly greed and displeasure, and from sinful, unwholesome dharmas? If kings or relatives summon him for the sake of enjoying desires, it is impossible that he would abandon and destroy the precepts. Bhikkhus, well done! Well done! Bhikkhus, the mind of a noble disciple who is endowed with hearing has long been inclined to solitude, tending to solitude, flowing to solitude, inclined to liberation, tending to liberation, flowing to liberation, inclined to nirvana, tending to nirvana, flowing to nirvana, peaceful, remote, liberated, pacified from dharmas such as the place of outflows, cooled, brahmachari, if kings or relatives summon him for the sake of enjoying desires, it is impossible that he would abandon and destroy the precepts. Otherwise, kings or relatives will become poor and weary in the future. Bhikkhus, for example, the water of the Ganges River has long flowed to the east, tended to the east, and flowed to the east. Then, many people came with hoes and shovels in their hands and said: The water of the Ganges River has long flowed to the east, tended to the east, and flowed to the east, we will make it flow to the west, tend to the west, and flow to the west.
