The practice is one: mindfulness related to the body. The dharma to be fully known is one: knowledge with outflows. The dharma to be abandoned is one: the pride of self. The dharma that accords with decline is one: improper attention. The dharma that accords with distinction is one: proper attention. The dharma that delights in realization is one: the samadhi without interruption. The dharma to be generated is one: the mind's liberation, when the time and union are pleasing. The dharma to be manifestly known is one: all sentient beings abide by food. The dharma to be directly realized is one: the mind's liberation is unmoving. Venerable ones, these ten dharmas are thus. The thusness that does not change, the thusness that is not different. The thusness of solitude, as it is, is not inverted. Thus, one should see with correct knowledge, as it is. Thus it is said. From what cause is this called a noble hearer, endowed with hearing? The basis of discussion is in Shravasti. Monks, a noble hearer endowed with hearing sees all as of the nature of suffering, and arising, and non-appearance, and taste, and fault, and definite departure, with correct knowledge as it is, and sees desires as a heap of coals, and sees desires thus. Seeing desires as they are, and seeing desires, there is no desire for desires, no attachment to desires, no joy in desires, no sinking into desires, no determination in desires, no clinging to desires, and the mind does not cling to them, and one becomes skilled and very skilled in conduct and dwelling. If one becomes skilled and very skilled in conduct and dwelling in this way, how can the mind be separated from worldly covetousness and unhappiness, sinful and unwholesome dharmas, when one is skilled and very skilled in conduct and dwelling? Monks, how does a noble hearer endowed with hearing see all as of the nature of suffering?

Monks, if a noble disciple who has heard [the teachings] sees all things as having the nature of suffering, arising, ceasing, tasting, having drawbacks, and being an escape, with correct wisdom, just as they are, what would that be? Monks, here, a noble disciple who has heard [the teachings] thoroughly understands, just as it is, that this is the noble truth of suffering, and thoroughly understands, just as it is, that this is the arising, the cessation, and the path leading to the cessation of suffering, the noble truth. Monks, in this way, a noble disciple who has heard [the teachings] will see all things as having the nature of suffering, arising, ceasing, tasting, having drawbacks, and being an escape, with correct wisdom, just as they are. Monks, how does a noble disciple who has heard [the teachings] see desires as like a pit of coals, and because of this, see desires in that way, know desires as they are, see desires, have no desire for desires, no attachment to desires, no delight in desires, no immersion in desires, no certainty in desires, no clinging to desires, and not fully engage the mind in them, and not abide in them? It is like this: not far from a village or town, there is a pit of coals filled with coals, without smoke or flame. Then, a person who is not of the nature of a child, not of the nature of ignorance, possessing wisdom, having obtained independence, desiring happiness, not desiring suffering, desiring to live, not desiring to die, not in harmony with death, comes and thinks: If I were to fall into this pit of coals without smoke or flame, I would die from that cause, or experience suffering close to death. So, he keeps far away from it, strives to keep away, and hopes to keep away. Monks, in the same way, a noble disciple who has heard [the teachings] sees desires as like a pit of coals, and because of this, sees desires in that way, knows desires as they are, sees desires, has no desire for desires, no attachment to desires.

They delight in desire, are immersed in desire, are determined in desire, are attached to desire, and their minds are completely absorbed in it and cannot abide. Monks, how is it that a noble disciple who is learned is skilled and highly skilled in conduct and dwelling? If, in conduct and dwelling, the mind is free from defilements with regard to worldly greed and displeasure, and evil, unwholesome dharmas, then in this way he becomes skilled and highly skilled in conduct and dwelling. Monks, it is like this: in a village or town not far away, there is a place full of many thorns. If someone enters there for some business, there are thorns in front, thorns behind, on the sides, above, below, and in all directions, then he will walk there mindfully, come and go mindfully, look around, and contract and stretch mindfully. Why? Because he is afraid of being pricked by thorns. Monks, similarly, noble disciples who are learned, relying on and dwelling near villages or towns, in the morning, taking their robes and alms bowls, when entering a village or town for alms, will carefully guard their bodies, carefully restrain their senses, and establish mindfulness to engage in alms gathering. There, they will come and go mindfully, walk mindfully, observe mindfully, contract mindfully, and stretch mindfully. Why? Because they are afraid of being pricked by thorns. Monks, what is called a thorn in this Dharma and Discipline? It is the nature of delight and the nature of attachment in the world, which is called a thorn in this Dharma and Discipline. What is the nature of delight and the nature of attachment in the world that is called a thorn in this Dharma and Discipline? It is like the five qualities of desire: forms knowable by the eye that are desirable, delightful, pleasing, gathering desire, and causing delight; sounds knowable by the ear
