When this was said, the monks, could the multitude of people with such power make the water of the Ganges River, which has long flowed eastward, sloped eastward, and become flowing eastward, flow westward, slope westward, and become flowing westward? Venerable ones, no. Why is that? Venerable ones, just as the water of the Ganges River has long flowed eastward, sloped eastward, and flowed eastward, it is not easy for the multitude of people to make it flow westward, slope westward, and become flowing westward. Otherwise, the multitude of people would become impoverished and become those destined to suffer. Monks, similarly, the mind of the noble disciple who possesses learning has long been inclined towards solitude, sloped towards solitude, and flowed towards solitude; inclined towards liberation, sloped towards liberation, and flowed towards liberation; inclined towards Nirvana, sloped towards Nirvana, and flowed towards Nirvana; peaceful, detached, greatly rejoicing in liberation, having become peaceful and cool from the dharmas that are like the place of outflows, having become a Brahmachari, when kings or relatives call for the sake of enjoying desires, it is impossible to abandon the training and degenerate. Otherwise, those kings or relatives would become impoverished and become those destined to suffer fatigue. Thus he spoke. In another sutra, it is also said that this is the power of an Arhat. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Then, the venerable Shariputra arose from correct concentration in the afternoon and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the venerable Shariputra said this to the Blessed One: Venerable one, how much power does a Bhikshu Arhat who has exhausted the outflows possess? Shariputra, there are eight kinds. Which eight? Shariputra, the mind of a Bhikshu Arhat who has exhausted the outflows has long been inclined towards solitude, sloped towards solitude, and flowed towards solitude. Inclined towards liberation, sloped towards liberation, and flowed towards liberation. Inclined towards Nirvana, sloped towards Nirvana, and flowed towards Nirvana. He sees desires as a heap of coals.
