experiencing them separately, and experiencing the exhaustion of hatred and the exhaustion of delusion separately. Therefore, having completely exhausted desire, completely exhausted hatred, and completely exhausted delusion, one does not do anything that would lead to sin, but relies on virtue, and studies the pacifying conduct. Because one studies conduct, it is therefore called the study of study. Then, the wanderer Śamatha, from what the Blessed One had said, rose and departed. Just as the wanderer Śamatha had spoken to the venerable Ānanda, so too did the Blessed One explain to the other monks. Now, if one asks, "By what means is one called a sinful, unwholesome dharma?" At the end of the first sutra of the Madhyama-āgama, it is said thus: "How does one become a śramaṇa? By pacifying the sinful, unwholesome dharmas that lead to rebirth, are completely defiled by afflictions, accompanied by disease, mature into suffering, and future birth, aging, sickness, and death, thus one becomes a śramaṇa. How does one become a brahmin? By turning away from the sinful, unwholesome dharmas that lead to rebirth, are completely defiled by afflictions, accompanied by disease, mature into suffering, and future birth, aging, sickness, and death, thus one becomes a brahmin. How does one become an ārya? By being far removed from the sinful, unwholesome dharmas that lead to rebirth, are completely defiled by afflictions, accompanied by disease, mature into suffering, and future birth, aging, sickness, and death, thus one becomes an ārya. How does one become a bather? By purifying the sinful, unwholesome dharmas that lead to rebirth, are completely defiled by afflictions, accompanied by disease, mature into suffering, and future birth, aging, sickness, and death, thus one becomes a bather." Thus it is said. Therefore, if one asks, "Then, is it necessary to supplement what the Buddha has said?" The basis of the story is in Śrāvastī. Monks, I will explain the śramaṇa and the fruits of the śramaṇa. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. What is the śramaṇa?

Now, the eight branches of the Noble Path, namely, from right view to right concentration. What is the fruit of a mendicant? There are four fruits of a mendicant. What are the four? The fruit of stream-entry is the fruit of a mendicant, the fruit of once-returning is the fruit of a mendicant, the fruit of non-returning is the fruit of a mendicant, and the fruit of an Arhat is the fruit of a mendicant. What is the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of a mendicant? It is that which has abandoned the three universally binding fetters. What is the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of a mendicant? It is that which has abandoned the three universally binding fetters and in whom attachment, hatred, and delusion have become attenuated. What is the fruit of non-returning, the fruit of a mendicant? It is that which has abandoned the five universally binding fetters corresponding to the lower part. What is the supreme of all fruits, the Arhat, what is the fruit of a mendicant? It is that which has completely abandoned attachment, completely abandoned hatred, completely abandoned delusion, and abandoned all defilements. Monks, I will explain in detail what I have said about mendicants and the fruits of mendicants, thus he spoke. In the sutra, the Blessed One is also called Brahma, which is explained in the brief exposition of the Indra Sutra. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, summoned the gods of the Thirty-Three and said: Friends, whatever good Dharma we gather and assemble in the heavenly assembly, let us bow to Brahma three times. Our bowing to Brahma three times will be equivalent to bowing to the Blessed One. Why is that? Because the Blessed One is also called Brahma, and is also called peaceful and cool. Thus he spoke. When the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya was born, the Blessed One was dwelling in Varanasi in the Deer Park at Isipatana. Then, the Blessed One summoned the five monks and said: Monks, this is the noble truth of suffering, monks, a Dharma I had not heard before.
