I have thus declared the means of severing former limits. Then, the Great Renowned Shakyamuni, the Bhagavan, rejoiced and rejoiced at what was said, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and then departed from the presence of the Bhagavan. The so-called eight liberations are those who abide having realized and cultivated them with the body. The eighth is the liberation of the cessation of perception and feeling, which is called the attainment of cessation. The second name is called realization with the body. From which sutra is it said that the attainment of cessation is realized with the body? From that very sutra, other classifications of noble beings are also briefly summarized. The sutra says, "Eighteen types of learners," etc. The Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. Then, the householder Anathapindika went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the householder Anathapindika said this to the Blessed One: Venerable one, how many objects of veneration are there in the world? Householder, there are two types: learners and non-learners. Householder, there are eighteen types of learners and nine types of non-learners. What are the eighteen types of learners? They are those who have entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of stream-entry, those who have entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of once-returning, those who have entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of non-returning, the fruit of non-returning, those who have entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of Arhatship, those who follow faith, those who follow Dharma, those who are liberated by faith, those who are attained by sight, those who are born from family to family, those with one interruption, those who attain Nirvana in the intermediate state, those who attain Nirvana upon birth, those who attain Nirvana with effort, those who attain Nirvana without effort, and those who go upstream. These are called the eighteen types of learners. What are the nine types of non-learners? They are those who are liable to fall away.

One who is endowed, and one who contemplates death, and one who protects, and one who is not weary of dwelling, and one who has a share of realization, and one who has the dharma of immovability, and one who is liberated by wisdom, and one who is liberated from one side, and one who is liberated from both sides, these are called the nine types of non-learners. These learners and non-learners are worthy of offerings and sacrifices in this world. Body, speech, and likewise, when the mind is upright, giving to whom brings great fruit, is the excellent field for making offerings. Thus it is said. These are the nature of morality, concentration, and wisdom, it is said. The beginning of the story is in Shravasti. Monks, these three are the three trainings, what are the three? Namely, the training of higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom. What is the training of higher morality? This is when a monk dwells in morality, protected by the Pratimoksha vows, possessing perfect conduct and practice, seeing fear even in the slightest faults, and training in the precepts that are properly taken, this is called the training of higher morality. What is the training of higher mind? This is when a monk, from being secluded from desires, practices and dwells in the fourth dhyana, this is called the training of higher concentration. What is the training of higher wisdom? This is when a monk truly knows that suffering is the noble truth, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path leading to the cessation of suffering is the noble truth, this is called the training of higher wisdom. The Blessed One declared thus, the Sugata spoke thus, and the Teacher further declared thus. Blessed One, higher morality and, mind and higher wisdom, the three trainings perfectly accomplished, the monk practices in that. Powerful, steadfast, diligent one, how is that day

Shin Tsen. As the night, so is the day. As the former, so is the latter. As the latter, so is the former. As below, so above. As above, so below. Always guarding and practicing the senses, With immeasurable samadhi, Subduing all directions, That is the correct path of learning, Called the training of the senses. It liberates the mind, If one discerns, it empties. That is the follower of the path of the teachings, Called the World-Perfect Buddha. Without ignorance, well-abiding, Endowed with knowledge and conduct, After death, craving ceases, One will attain complete liberation. Like a lamp that has gone out, His mind is liberated. Thus it is said. In the Sutra, it is said, "Because of training in the pacifying discipline, therefore it is called 'therefore'." The Blessed One was dwelling in the Bird Sanctuary of the Light Garden in Rajagriha. Then the wandering ascetic Pacifier went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, from being with the Blessed One to sitting down on one side, the wandering ascetic Pacifier asked the Blessed One, "Gautama, it is said 'training, training,' why is it said 'training, training'?" Pacifier, because of training in the discipline, it is said 'training'. "Gautama, in what discipline does one train?" One trains in the higher discipline of morality from time to time, and in the higher mind, and in the higher wisdom. Pacifier, therefore, because of training in the discipline, it is called 'training'. "Gautama, whatever monk is an Arhat, with defilements exhausted, work done, what was to be done done, burden cast off, having attained his own benefit, completely exhausted the bonds of existence, with mind completely liberated by correct knowledge, at that time, in what discipline does he train?" Pacifier, whatever monk is an Arhat, with defilements exhausted, work done, what was to be done done, burden cast off, having attained his own benefit, completely exhausted the bonds of existence, with mind completely liberated by correct knowledge, at that time, desire is extinguished without remainder.
