May I be born in that long-abiding pure land. If I, by lineage, become an all-knowing one, may that all-knowing one be the end of my suffering. If I, by lineage, do not become an all-knowing one, and if I ultimately decline, may I be born in the place called Akanishtha. Blessed One, I am a stream-enterer, a Sugata stream-enterer, abiding without attainment, I desire once-returning. Well done, Indra, abide in diligence. By what is the stream-enterer determined, by his own power, from what cause does he understand the first great distinction? Blessed One, not from you, nor from another teacher, do I directly know this distinction that is unlike others. Sages, like gods, abiding here, the wise hold on as if regaining life. Thus he spoke. Having attained cessation, he does not return. He desires to realize it with the body. Thus it is said. The Blessed One was staying at the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu. At that time, many Shakyas from Kapilavastu gathered together and were discussing the following topic: "The one named Mahanama, now here, whoever it may be, now here, the Shakya archer, at the time of death, having drunk intoxicants and broken his vows, the Blessed One has predicted that he is a stream-enterer, possessing the Dharma of non-decline, certain to attain perfect enlightenment, and will ultimately experience seven rebirths, being reborn seven times among gods and humans, and will attain the end of suffering." Therefore, Mahanama, you should go to where the Blessed One is, ask the Blessed One about this matter, and hold it as the Blessed One has predicted. Then, the Shakya Mahanama went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Shakya Mahanama said to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, we, the many Shakyas of Kapilavastu, have gathered together and were discussing the following topic: the one named Maha

So what will ultimately change here now? Here now, the Shakya archer, having drunk what intoxicates him at the time of death and having broken his vows, the Blessed One predicted that he has entered the stream, possesses the Dharma of non-decline, and will definitely attain complete enlightenment, at most seven lifetimes. Having connected seven lifetimes among gods and humans, he will bring an end to suffering. Venerable, what is this like? I have such doubts about the Blessed One, so I ask. Great Name, it is well spoken that noble disciples say, "The Sugata is the teacher, the Sugata is the teacher," and generate faith, possess upright views, and views will become perfect. Great Name, it is well spoken that noble disciples say, "The Blessed One has well spoken this Dharma, the Blessed One has well spoken the Dharma," and generate faith, possess upright views, and views will become perfect. Great Name, it is well spoken that noble disciples say, "The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples has entered well, the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples has entered well," and generate faith, possess upright views, and views will become perfect. Great Name, here a noble disciple has unwavering faith in the Buddha, and unwavering faith in the Dharma and the Sangha, and possesses great wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, wisdom of renunciation, wisdom of detachment, wisdom of liberation, and is perfectly endowed with these wisdoms, and abides having realized the eight liberations with the body, and this person's wisdom is the wisdom of completely exhausting defilements. Great Name, this noble disciple will not go to hell, will not go to the realm of hungry ghosts and animals, will not go to bad destinies and bad migrations, will not fall into wrong views. Anyone who says that he is liberated from both sides is speaking correctly. Furthermore, Great Name, a noble disciple does not generate faith in the Buddha, from "does not generate faith" to "possesses the wisdom of liberation," abides having realized the eight liberations with the body, and this person's wisdom is the wisdom of completely exhausting defilements. Great Name
