Poison! Having sat down in one place, that monk said this to the Bhagavan: "Venerable one, what is my 'self' when I am alone in this solitary place, abiding in samadhi? What is my 'self'? What is my 'self' like? Where is my 'self'?" Such speculations arose in my mind. Monk, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will show and explain two things. What are the two? The eye and form, the ear and sound, the nose and smell, the tongue and taste, the body and touch, the mind and dharma, these are called the two. Monk, if someone says, 'I will reject the two things shown by the ascetic Gautama, and I will show two other things,' that is just empty talk, not understanding the answer to the question, and instead, confusion arises, and it is not a correct object. Why is that? Because depending on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises. Monk, for him, the nature of the inner cause, in the lump of flesh of the eye, becomes hard and solid, this is called the earth element of the inner nature in the lump of flesh of the eye. Monk, for him, the nature of the inner cause, in the lump of flesh of the eye, water and becoming water, moist and soft, and becoming soft and grasped, this is called the water element of the inner nature in the lump of flesh of the eye. Monk, for him, the nature of the inner cause, in the lump of flesh of the eye, fire and becoming fire, warm and becoming warm, and being grasped, this is called the fire element of the inner nature in the lump of flesh of the eye. Monk, for him, the nature of the inner cause, in the lump of flesh of the eye, wind and becoming wind, light and moving, and being grasped, this is called the wind element of the inner nature in the lump of flesh of the eye. Monk, just as when two hands are joined and struck, a sound arises, so too, depending on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises, the contact of the three gatherings, and the feeling, perception, and thought that arise together, these are called. Such a nature of dharmas is impermanent, unstable, not lasting, unreliable, and is a completely changing dharma.
