Because it arises from causes and conditions, and because it disintegrates after arising. Therefore, monks, conditioned phenomena are empty, conditioned phenomena are empty. If one knows and understands this with the mind, joy and true joy will arise. Why is that? Monks, conditioned phenomena are empty, not permanent, not stable, not eternal, subject to change, empty of self and belonging to self. For example, a person with eyes, holding a torch, enters an empty house and sees that it is empty and desolate. Similarly, monks, if one knows and understands with the mind that conditioned phenomena are empty and desolate, joy and great joy will arise in the mind. Why is that? Monks, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, unstable, not eternal, subject to change, and devoid of self and belonging to self. Then, that monk rejoiced and delighted in the words spoken by the Blessed One. He bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One gave the teaching of the simile of clapping hands, and prophesied of himself, saying, "Alone in solitude, immeasurable, without sorrow, having abandoned." In order to abide in solitude, immeasurable, and without sorrow, he shaved his hair and beard, put on the sacred robes, and with faith went forth from home to homelessness. Having practiced the unsurpassed pure conduct, he realized the self-knowledge in the present life, and directly saw: "Birth is exhausted, pure conduct is established, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to this world." He became an Arhat and liberated in mind. As the Blessed One said, that which is called form is form because it is subject to change, and so on. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Monks, what are the five aggregates of clinging? They are the aggregate of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Monks, whatever renunciant or Brahmin remembers and recalls various states of the past, or remembers, or has remembered, or will remember, all of these are aggregates of clinging.

That is, regarding these five aggregates, one remembers, recollects, or rightly remembers various past states. Which five? The ascetic or Brahmin remembers the past, saying, 'I was endowed with form in the past. I was endowed with such and such form.' Like this, one truly remembers various past states, remembers, recollects, or rightly remembers. The ascetic or Brahmin remembers the past, saying, 'I was endowed with consciousness in the past. I was endowed with such and such consciousness.' Like this, one truly remembers various past states, remembers, recollects, or rightly remembers. Monks, form is touchable, therefore it is called the aggregate of grasping at form. How is it touchable? It is touchable by the touch of the hand, by the impact of a clod of earth, by the impact of a stick, by the impact of a weapon, by cold, heat, hunger, thirst, mosquitoes, flies, wind, sun, and the impact of poisonous snakes. If touched by these, it is touchable and is form. Therefore, it is called the aggregate of grasping at form because it is touchable. This aggregate of grasping at form is also impermanent, suffering, and subject to change. Monks, because of feeling and experiencing, it is called feeling. Therefore, it is called the aggregate of grasping at feeling. What does one feel? One feels pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain. Monks, therefore, because of feeling and experiencing, it is called the aggregate of grasping at feeling. This aggregate of grasping at feeling is also impermanent, suffering, and subject to change. Monks, because of accumulating and knowing, it is perception, therefore it is called the aggregate of grasping at perception. What does one accumulate and know? One knows small, one knows large, one knows immeasurable, one knows nothing at all. Monks, because of accumulating and knowing, therefore it is called the aggregate of grasping at perception.

O! The aggregate of consciousness that is taken is also impermanent, painful, and subject to change. Monks, because formations manifestly form and formations manifestly form, therefore it is called the aggregate of formations that is taken. How do formations manifestly form? Form manifestly forms, and so do feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness manifestly form. Monks, because formations manifestly form and formations manifestly form, therefore it is called the aggregate of formations that is taken. The aggregate of formations that is taken is also impermanent, painful, and subject to change. Monks, because of knowing and thoroughly knowing, it is called the aggregate of consciousness that is taken. What is knowing? Knowing form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena. Monks, because of knowing and thoroughly knowing, it is called the aggregate of consciousness that is taken. Monks, the aggregate of consciousness that is taken is also impermanent, painful, and subject to change. Monks, in this regard, a noble disciple who has heard and possesses learning should train himself thoroughly in this way: I am destroyed by the form that arises now, just as I am destroyed by the form that arises now, so too the form of the past has destroyed me. When I am destroyed by the form that arises now, I do not delight in the past form, because at that time I also know that it is the same as now, so I will not rely on the past form, nor will I delight in the future form, and for the form that arises now, I will attain disgust, detachment, and cessation. A noble disciple who has heard and possesses learning should train himself thoroughly in this way: I am destroyed by the feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness that arise now, just as I am destroyed by the form that arises now, so too the consciousness of the past has destroyed me. I am destroyed by the consciousness that arises now.
