Having abandoned and completely understood three fetters, namely: the view of self-identity, attachment to rites and rituals, and doubt. This is a stream-enterer, one who is certain not to fall into the lower realms, and who, at most, will transmigrate between humans and gods seven times, and then make an end of suffering. This is called 'seven times at most.' Monks, whoever sees these things with right wisdom, and whose lust, hatred, and delusion have become thin, and who, having come to this world only once, will make an end of suffering, is called a 'once-returner.' Monks, whoever sees these things with right wisdom as they really are, and having abandoned and completely understood the five lower fetters associated with the final part, namely: the view of self-identity, desire for sensual pleasures, ill-will, attachment to rites and rituals, and doubt. This one, having been born there, attains Nirvana there, and is of such a nature as not to return to this world, is called a 'non-returner.' Monks, whoever thoroughly sees these things with right wisdom as they really are, without clinging, the mind is separated and liberated from the defilements, what had to be done has been done, the burden has been laid down, one's own benefit has been attained, the fetters of all existence have been completely exhausted, and the mind is liberated by right wisdom, thus it was declared. Monks, if one does not fully know and completely understand one thing... The beginning of this discourse was in Savatthi. Monks, I will teach you the category of Dharma called 'fully knowing and completely understanding all things.' Listen well, pay close attention, and I will speak. What is the category of Dharma called 'fully knowing and completely understanding all things'? Monks, the eye is fully known and completely understood, forms, eye-consciousness, eye-contact, and the feeling born of eye-contact, whether it is pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful, these are to be fully known and completely understood.
