Now, why is that? For example, a monk's birth, aging, sickness, death, and rebirth after death; monks, formations are like illusions, like mirages, they are the nature of complete destruction, they exist only for a short time, they depend on other conditions, they arise from nothing and even after arising they perish. Monks, therefore, formations are empty, formations are empty, knowing and understanding this truly in the mind, true joy arises. Why is that? Monks, formations are empty, not constant, stable, or eternal, they are the nature of complete change, empty of self and what belongs to self. For example, if a person with eyes holds a torch and enters an empty house, he will see it as empty and void, similarly, monks, all formations are empty. Knowing and understanding that all formations are empty, true joy arises in the mind. Why is that? Monks, formations are empty, not constant, stable, or eternal, they are the nature of complete change, empty of self and what belongs to self. Up to the gathering of the ear, nose, tongue, and body, and the arising of the body's consciousness from contact. Monks, for him, the nature of the inner condition, the solid and hardened part of the lump of flesh of the body is grasped, this is called the earth element of the inner nature of the lump of flesh of the body. Monks, for him, the nature of the inner condition, the water and the part that becomes water of the lump of flesh of the body, the soft and the part that becomes soft, this and the part that is grasped, is called the water element of the inner nature of the lump of flesh of the body. Monks, for him, the nature of the inner condition, the heat and the part that becomes heat of the lump of flesh of the body, the warm and the part that becomes warm is grasped, this is called the fire element of the inner nature of the lump of flesh of the body. Monks, for him, the nature of the inner condition, the wind and the part that becomes wind of the lump of flesh of the body, the light and the part that becomes moving is grasped, this is called the wind element of the inner nature of the lump of flesh of the body. Monks, for example, just as when two hands are brought together and clapped, a sound arises, similarly,

Depending on the body and what is touched, bodily consciousness arises, the touch of the three combined, and the feeling, perception, and intention that arise simultaneously. Such a self of Dharma nature is impermanent, unstable, not eternal, and unreliable. Bhikshus, it is a completely changing Dharma nature. Why is that? Bhikshus, like birth, old age, sickness, death, death and rebirth, like illusions and mirages. It is a completely destructive Dharma nature, only for that period of time, existing by relying on other conditions, from not arising to arising, and even after arising, it will be destroyed.
