Having spoken thus, the Teacher further declared: Having understood the supreme Dharma, it is the unsurpassed place of offering. Utmost faith in the supreme Buddha, utmost sincerity in the supreme world, utmost faith in the supreme Dharma that is peaceful and free from attachment, utmost faith in the supreme Sangha, the unsurpassed field of merit, performing supreme giving, accumulating supreme merit. May one obtain supreme life and complexion, fame and power, and happiness, as well as supreme bedding, and enjoyment becomes enjoyment itself. Abiding in the supreme place, one will also obtain supreme beauty. Giving supreme giving, possessing the supreme Dharma, and having perfected wisdom, one will go to Nirvana. Thus he declared. In the Sutra, it is said: A monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Then, another monk arose from meditation and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, he asked the Blessed One: Venerable one, a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life, a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life, by what means does one become a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life? By what means does the Sugata establish the designation 'a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life'? Having asked thus, the Blessed One said to the monk: Monk, well done! Well done! Monk, you ask such a question, from one called having attained Nirvana in this very life, up to the establishment of the name as before. Monk, can you ask like this? Venerable one, it is so. Therefore, monk, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. Monk, if one is disgusted with form, free from attachment, ceases, and without grasping, the mind is completely liberated from the defilements and abides, then one can be called a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life.

If a monk feels revulsion, detachment, cessation, and relinquishment towards form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, then his mind, being liberated from these dharmas and abiding, can be called a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life. A monk who has merely done this becomes a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life. A monk who has merely done this is designated by the Tathagata as a monk who has attained Nirvana in this very life. Then, that monk rejoiced and was delighted at what the Blessed One had said, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Thus, "completely abandoning suffering," and so on. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Then, another monk, alone in a secluded place, abiding in perfect inner concentration, had this thought arise in his mind: How should one know and how should one see in order to realize the Dharma? Then, that monk arose from his perfect inner concentration and went to where the Blessed One was, and having approached, as before, up to the point of saying to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, I, being alone in a secluded place, abiding in perfect inner concentration, had this thought arise in my mind: How should one know and how should one see in order to realize the Dharma?" Therefore, monk, you should well remember and speak of a pair, or two, during the day. What are the two? They are the eye and form, the ear and sound, up to the mind and dharmas. This is called two. Monk, if some were to say, "This pair established by the ascetic Gautama is not two, but I should reverse it from these two and establish other two," this is merely words, not knowing the correct answer to the question, and causing confusion, because this is not his realm. Why is that? Monk, the eye-consciousness that arises dependent on the eye and form, and the contact of the three together, and the feeling, perception, and thought that arise simultaneously, these are the four non-material aggregates of me, monk, and

The faculty of the eye with form, just this is called a person. To this, are applied the names sentient being, person, born of power, son of power, individual, person, life, and nourishment. Bhikshu, to this, from 'my eye sees forms' up to 'the mind knows dharmas,' is applied approximately. To this, these are also just names, that the name of the one with life is called this, the lineage is like this, the clan is like this, experiences such happiness and suffering, lives long and for a long time for such a period, the end of life becomes such a period, bhikshu, this is just some perception, this is just some vow. How is it that all of this is just a name? Bhikshu, all these dharmas are impermanent, manifestly compounded, mind-born, and dependently arisen. Whatever is impermanent, manifestly compounded, mind-born, and dependently arisen, those are suffering. That is the arising of suffering, the abiding of suffering, and manifest increase, and whatever suffering repeatedly arises. Whatever suffering is completely abandoned, purified, exhausted, free from desire, ceased, pacified, extinguished, without connection to other suffering, without taking, without arising, like this, all aggregates are certainly abandoned, existence is exhausted, free from desire, ceased, nirvana. Bhikshu, whoever thinks about, measures, and abides in these dharmas, afterwards will not allow mental distress to fully enter, and is without taking. Bhikshu, if I know and see in this way, then the dharma will become manifest. The consciousness of the body arising from dependence on the ear, nose, tongue, body, and touch, and the feeling born together with the touch of the three combined, and perception and thought, these are my four non-form aggregates, and the faculty of the body with form, just this is called a person. To this, are applied the names sentient being, person, born of power, intelligent one, individual, person, life, and nourishment. Bhikshu, to this, my eye sees forms
