Whatever obscures and extremely obscures these beings, universally does and extremely universally does, covers, veils, and extremely covers, like tangled twine, like munja grass and balbaja, and those who go and come, connecting from this world to the next, and revolving in samsara, should be relied upon, as it is said, this is extensively explained, thus it was declared. The Blessed One said that among all dharmas, whether conditioned or unconditioned, the best is detachment from desire. The basis of this discourse was in Shravasti. Monks, the excellent refuge is of three kinds. What are the three? The excellent refuge is the Buddha, the excellent refuge is the Dharma, and the excellent refuge is the Sangha. What is the excellent refuge, the Buddha? Among all sentient beings, whether footless, two-footed, many-footed, with form, without form, with perception, without perception, or neither with nor without perception, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, is said to be the best. Whoever has even a little faith in the Buddha, becoming a god among gods, a human among humans, should expect such an excellent result. This is called the excellent refuge, the Buddha. What is the excellent refuge, the Dharma? Among all dharmas, whether conditioned or unconditioned, the best is said to be detachment from desire. Whoever has even a little faith in the Dharma, having faith, becoming a god among gods, a human among humans, should expect such an excellent result. This is called the excellent refuge, the Dharma. What is the excellent refuge, the Sangha? Among all assemblies, whether gathered or not gathered, or any retinue, the best is said to be the Sangha of the Tathagata's disciples. Whoever has even a little faith in the Dharma and the Sangha, having faith, becoming a god among gods, a human among humans, should expect such an excellent result. This is called the excellent refuge, the Sangha.
