Furthermore, by unwise attention, (thinking) did I exist in the past? Or did I not exist in the past? What was I like in the past? How did I exist in the past? Like this, following the limits of the future, (thinking) will I exist in the future? Or will I not exist in the future? What will I be like in the future? This is called being bound by the future. What is to be abandoned by abandoning defilements? Monks, in this case, a mad elephant should be completely abandoned from afar, as well as a mad dog, beating, a wild horse, an unknown place, a dangerous cliff, a lake, an abyss, a vehicle, a toilet, a sinful person, a vile person, a friend of a sinful person, the bedding of a sinful person, a seat, such bedding and seat, if a wise person practicing celibacy clings to it, the impossible becomes possible, and what should not be considered is considered, such bedding and seat should be completely abandoned from afar, abandoning it can abandon the arising of afflictions, obstacles, complete suffering and confusion, like this, not arising afflictions, obstacles, complete suffering and confusion, this is called abandoning by abandoning. What is to be abandoned by using defilements? In this case, monks, after proper consideration, one wears robes, not for play, not for pride, not for adornment, but to ward off the touch of mosquitoes, horseflies, wind, heat, and snakes, and to cover shame and secret places. After proper consideration, one partakes of alms, not for play, not for pride, not for adornment, but to maintain this body, not to harm (practice), to eliminate hunger, to support celibacy, to eliminate old feelings, to generate new feelings, for the sake of survival, strength, and dwelling in comfort.

Having examined them separately, one lies down on bedding and mats, not for the sake of play, not for the sake of fatness, not for the sake of adornment, not for the sake of embellishment, but in order to subdue the ordinary destructions and to maintain equanimity. Then, having examined them separately, one takes medicine to cure illness, not for the sake of play, not for the sake of adornment, but in order to eliminate painful bodily sensations such as intense, rough, piercing, unpleasant, and life-threatening feelings, and to bring about joy. If one does not rely on discernment, then defilements, obstacles, complete torment, and near disturbance will not arise; this is called what should be abandoned by relying on discernment. What is defiled and should be abandoned by taming? In this regard, a monk, having generated thoughts of desire, is intolerant and abandons and distances himself from them; having generated thoughts of harmful intent and thoughts of violence, is intolerant and abandons and distances himself from them, and tames them. Taming the defilements, obstacles, complete torment, and near disturbance that have arisen, and preventing them from arising in this way. Taming defilements, obstacles, complete torment, and near disturbance is called discipline. What is defiled and should be abandoned by patience? In this regard, a monk initiates and abides in diligence in virtuous dharmas, with powerful diligence, joy, steadfastness, overcoming, and not abandoning responsibility, even if only skin, tendons, and bones remain, and the flesh and blood of the body dry up, he still exerts diligence in virtuous dharmas, with powerful diligence, joy, steadfastness, overcoming, and not abandoning responsibility, until he obtains what has not yet been obtained, he will continue to exert diligence. He thinks thus: Having exerted diligence and remained steadfast, has bodily fatigue arisen? Or has mental fatigue arisen? Or has illness occurred in body and mind? Or has body and mind been completely tormented? Or has body and mind been completely disturbed? Even so, the one with life will not abandon diligence because of that. The one with life endures hunger and thirst, and mosquitoes.

May I endure the touch of mosquitoes, wind, heat, and poisonous snakes, as well as speech known by others, and the paths of abusive words. May I endure the painful, intense, rough, piercing, unpleasant, and life-threatening bodily sensations that arise again and again, and may I generate endurance. If one cannot endure, then defilements, obstacles, complete suffering, and near disturbance will arise. If one endures in this way, then defilements, obstacles, complete suffering, and near disturbance will not arise. This is called abandoning defilements through endurance. What is the abandonment of defilements through cultivation? Here, a monk dwells contemplating the five aggregates of clinging as having the nature of arising and ceasing. That is, this is form, this is the arising of form, this is the cessation of form, this is feeling, this is perception, this is mental formation, this is consciousness, this is the arising of consciousness, this is the cessation of consciousness. Thus, contemplating these five aggregates of clinging as having the nature of arising and ceasing, the mindfulness enlightenment factor dwells in solitude, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, and cultivates complete abandonment. The enlightenment factors of discrimination of phenomena, effort, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity dwell in solitude, dwell in detachment, dwell in cessation, and cultivate complete abandonment. If one does not cultivate, defilements, obstacles, complete suffering, and near disturbance will arise. If one cultivates in this way, defilements, obstacles, complete suffering, and disturbance will not arise. This is called abandoning defilements through cultivation. Thus, monks, whatever defilements are to be abandoned by seeing, they are abandoned by seeing. Whatever defilements are to be abandoned by restraining, they are completely abandoned by restraining. Whatever defilements are to be abandoned by completely abandoning, they are completely abandoned.
