As it is said in the context of what is called the two sources of birth. The sutra says, aren't these three the characteristics of conditioned phenomena? Answer: The origin is in Shravasti. Monks, these three are conditioned, and are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. What are the three? The arising of conditioned phenomena is also manifest, and destruction and change from abiding are also manifest. Unconditioned phenomena do not manifest arising, and do not manifest destruction and change from abiding. Thus the Blessed One declared. For example, what is called the arising of birth, and what is called destruction by impermanence itself, are as it is said. As it is said: All conditioned things are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease, their quieting is bliss. Now, therefore, the feeling of joy of the son of good family is known as it is, as it is said. The origin is in Shravasti. Monks, what is called having power is truly spoken of by the son of good family, joy. Monks, what is called beautiful and with great desire is truly spoken of by the venerable joy, not to others. Monks, the son of good family, joy, dwells guarding the gates of the senses, knowing the measure of food, not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, diligently practicing yoga, endowed with excellent mindfulness and awareness, and can practice pure and complete celibacy for as long as he lives. Monks, with what senses does that son of good family, joy, guard the gates? Monks, the son of good family, joy, seeing forms with the eye, does not grasp at characteristics, does not grasp at secondary characteristics, and dwells guarding with special protection of the eye sense. His mind is free from defilement from worldly greed and unpleasant sinful and unwholesome dharmas, and he strives, guards, and protects them. He dwells guarding the eye sense with the eye sense. Hearing sounds with the ear, smelling odors with the nose, tasting flavors with the tongue, touching tangibles with the body, and knowing dharmas with the mind, he does not grasp at characteristics, does not grasp at secondary characteristics, and so on as before.

Thus, he disciplines and guards, and dwells with the mind controlled by the mind. Monks, this is called the guarding of the sense doors by a good son of a family. Monks, what is the good son of a family who knows the measure of food? Monks, the good son of a family eats food knowingly, not for play, not for pride, not for adornment, not for embellishment, but only to maintain the body, to sustain it, to ward off hunger, and to support the holy life. It is for the sake of averting old feelings and generating new feelings, and for the sake of dwelling in strength and comfort. For example, when a carpenter's son applies oil or sesame oil to the axle of a cart, it is not for the sake of play, not for the sake of pride, not for the sake of adornment, not for the sake of embellishment, but only for the sake of being able to bear the burden. Similarly, when a physician applies oil or sesame oil to a wound, it is not for the sake of play, not for the sake of adornment, not for the sake of embellishment, but only for the sake of healing the wound. Monks, in the same way, the good son of a family eats food knowingly, and so on, as previously stated, for the sake of dwelling in comfort. Monks, this is called the good son of a family who knows the measure of food. Monks, what is the good son of a family who dwells diligently in the practice of not sleeping in the early and late parts of the night? Monks, the good son of a family, during the day, while walking and dwelling, has no mental obscurations regarding the Dharma, and is completely pure. In the first watch of the night, while walking and dwelling, he has no mental obscurations regarding the Dharma, and is completely pure. In the middle watch of the night, after washing his feet outside the monastery, he lies down on his right side, with one foot on top of the other, mindful and aware, focusing on the perception of light. In the last watch of the night, he quickly gets up and, while walking and dwelling, has no mental obscurations regarding the Dharma, and is completely pure. Monks.

This refers to the son of good family, Gawa, who does not sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, but strives in yoga. Monks, what is the supreme mindfulness and awareness of the son of good family, Gawa? Monks, when the son of good family, Gawa, looks to the east, he looks with all his mind. If he looks to the south, west, and north, he also looks with all his mind. When he looks in this way, his mind will be free from the attachment and displeasure of the world, from evil and unwholesome things, and will be without defilements. Monks, the feelings of the son of good family, Gawa, arise with awareness, abide with awareness, cease with awareness, and become completely exhausted and completely extinguished, and this is also due to mindfulness, not non-mindfulness. Perception and conduct also arise with awareness, abide with awareness, cease with awareness, and become completely exhausted and completely extinguished, and this is also due to mindfulness, not non-mindfulness. Monks, this is the supreme mindfulness and awareness of the son of good family, Gawa. Monks, therefore, one should train in this way: like the son of good family, Gawa, abide having completely restrained the doors of the senses; like the son of good family, Gawa, know the measure of food; like the son of good family, Gawa, abide striving in the yoga of not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night; like the son of good family, Gawa, be endowed with supreme mindfulness and awareness. Monks, the teachings given to Gawa should be regarded like Gawa. Then another monk spoke this verse: Restraining the senses, each with mindfulness, Likewise knowing the measure of food equally, Knowing such causes of the mind, The Blessed One spoke to the venerable Gawa. Thus he spoke. The verse relies on the name. This is called. The place is in Shravasti. Then another god, whose color was exceedingly superior and radiant, came at night to where the Blessed One was. Having come, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Thereafter
