I also, with the color of a god, caused all the gardens of Jetavana to be filled with vast light, and gathering in one direction, at that time that god spoke this verse: What is the cause of a verse? What is its laughter? What does a verse rely on? What are the four lines of a verse? The Blessed One said: The cause of a verse is desire. Its laughter is letters. A verse relies on names. The four lines of a verse are poets. Then, that god was exceedingly pleased and rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said, and bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and disappeared there. In the sutras beginning with "The arising of defilements," the Blessed One was dwelling in Kotuvana, in the Kalamashadammyana of Kotuvana. Then, the Blessed One called to the monks, saying: Monks, I say that by knowing and seeing, defilements are extinguished; not by not knowing and not seeing. Monks, what is it that by knowing and seeing, defilements are extinguished; and not by not knowing and not seeing? It is unwise attention and wise attention. Monks, by unwise attention, unarisen defilements of desire arise, and having arisen, they increase and expand; unarisen defilements of existence and defilements of ignorance arise, and having arisen, they increase and expand. Monks, by wise attention, unarisen defilements of desire do not arise, and those that have arisen are abandoned. Unarisen defilements of existence and defilements of ignorance do not arise, and those that have arisen are abandoned. Monks, an unlearned ordinary person who has not seen noble beings, is not skilled in the Dharma of the noble ones, and is not disciplined by the Dharma of the noble ones, does not fully understand in accordance with reality, and by unwise attention, thinking "my Dharma," unarisen defilements of desire arise, and having arisen, they increase and expand. Unarisen defilements of existence and defilements of ignorance arise, and having arisen, they increase and expand. Likewise, by wise attention to "my Dharma"

Therefore, for the outflows of desire that have not arisen, one does not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, one abandons. For the outflows of existence and the outflows of ignorance that have not arisen, one does not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, one abandons. Thus, not truly knowing as it is, one attends to those things that are not to be attended to, and does not attend to those things that are to be attended to. Because one attends to those things that are not to be attended to, and does not attend to those things that are to be attended to, thus, for the outflows of desire that have not arisen, one causes them to arise, and those that have arisen, they increase and expand. For the outflows of existence and the outflows of ignorance that have not arisen, one causes them to arise, and those that have arisen, they increase and expand. Thus, I, by attending to the Dharma, for the outflows of desire that have not arisen, do not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, I abandon. For the outflows of existence and the outflows of ignorance that have not arisen, I do not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, I abandon. Thus, he truly knows as it is, and does not attend to those things that are not to be attended to; and attends to those things that are to be attended to. Because he does not attend to those things that are not to be attended to, and attends to those things that are to be attended to, thus, for the outflows of desire that have not arisen, one does not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, one abandons. For the outflows of existence and the outflows of ignorance that have not arisen, one does not cause them to arise, and those that have arisen, one abandons. Monks, the outflows that are obstacles, completely tormenting, and nearly disturbing, are of seven kinds. Which seven? There are outflows that are to be abandoned by seeing, there are outflows that are to be abandoned by restraining, there are outflows that are to be abandoned by abandoning, there are outflows that are to be abandoned by using, there are outflows that are to be abandoned by taming, there are outflows that are to be abandoned by enduring, and there are outflows that are to be abandoned by cultivating. Monks, what are the outflows that are to be abandoned by seeing? Monks, an unlearned ordinary person who has not seen noble beings, is not skilled in the Dharma of the noble ones, and is not tamed by the Dharma of the noble ones, thus
