Having calmed down and completely purified the inner mind, with the mind focused on one point, without discrimination or thought, one cultivates and abides in the second dhyana, which is characterized by joy and happiness born of samadhi. This is the second successive abiding absorption. He, detached from desire for joy, abides in equanimity, possessing mindfulness and awareness, experiencing happiness individually with the body, which the noble ones call equanimity, possessing mindfulness, and endowed with happiness, cultivates and abides in the third dhyana. This is the third successive abiding absorption. He abandons happiness and also abandons suffering, With the previous mental pleasure and displeasure having ceased, he cultivates and abides in the fourth dhyana, which is characterized by pure equanimity that is neither pleasure nor pain. This is the fourth successive abiding absorption. He completely transcends all perceptions of form, eliminates perceptions of resistance, does not contemplate various perceptions, and thinking "space is infinite," cultivates and abides in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fifth. Then, completely transcending all the sphere of infinite space, thinking "consciousness is infinite," he cultivates and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the sixth. He completely transcends all the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking "there is nothing at all," he cultivates and abides in the sphere of nothingness, this is the seventh. He completely transcends all the sphere of nothingness, and cultivates and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the eighth. He completely transcends all the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and having physically realized and cultivated the cessation of perception and feeling, he abides, this is the ninth. This is the ninth successive abiding absorption. Thus it was taught. The contact of the three combined, and the feeling arising from contact, and so forth, are drawn out as in the example of clapping hands in the first chapter of the Abhidharmakosha. Ignorance gathers and relies on contact, giving rise to...

Regarding the [sutra] beginning with "Jyestha," the setting is in Shravasti. Then, the Blessed One, in the morning, having put on his robes and taken his bowl, entered Shravasti for alms. Having kept alms in Shravasti, and having finished the meal, he put away the bowl. Without being seen by the community of monks, and without informing the attendant monk, he took his robes and bowl and traveled west, going to wherever the Andavana grove was. Another monk, dwelling in the Andavana grove, as he was walking, saw the Blessed One alone, without a companion, without an attendant, carrying his robes and bowl. He traveled west and came to the Andavana grove and saw him sitting in the mango grove. Having seen him, he went to where the venerable Ananda was. Having gone there, he said this to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, do you know? I was dwelling in the Andavana grove, and as I was walking, I saw the Blessed One alone, without a companion, without an attendant, carrying his robes and bowl. He traveled west and came to the Andavana grove and was sitting in the mango grove." When the Blessed One was not seen by the community of monks, and without informing the attendant monk, he departed with his robes and bowl, at that time no monk followed in the footsteps of the Blessed One. Why is that? Because at that time the Blessed One dwelt in solitude, dwelling in seclusion. Then, the Blessed One traveled north to Panchanada and stayed, relying on another good sala tree. Then, many monks went to where the venerable Ananda was. Having gone there, they said this to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, have you heard where the Blessed One is staying?" "Venerable ones, I have heard that the Blessed One is traveling west," and as before, "he is staying near a good sala tree." "Venerable Ananda, don't you know? We have not seen the Blessed One for a long time."
