Having gone to where he was, having approached, he spoke to me thus: It is like this, where do the four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, completely cease without any remainder? Where do they completely vanish, are exhausted, and come to an end? To that, he gave this instruction: Bhikshu, some wise men will understand the meaning of the simile, so listen to a simile. Bhikshu, in the past, many merchants of Jambudvipa embarked on a ship to cross the ocean, carrying a bird that could see the other shore, and crossed the great ocean for the sake of wealth. As far as they went, they would send out the bird that could see the other shore. If the bird saw the other shore, it would not return to its place but would go to the other shore. If the bird did not see the other shore, it would return to its place and would not go to the other shore. Similarly, Bhikshu, you, like a bird that has not seen the other shore, went to the Brahma world but did not receive a prophecy, and returned to me. However, Bhikshu, this question should not be asked in this way, for asking in this way will not be complete. How should the question be asked, and how will the question be complete? Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it. Where do earth, water, and fire, and wind no longer operate, and where do long and short, fine and coarse, good and non-good, and where do name and form, all cease without remainder? How, having fully understood the Dharma, will the prophecy be obtained, that is, cessation? Consciousness is invisible, boundless, all-pervading, but this pervasion will not occur, nor will earth, water, fire, and wind operate, nor long and short, fine and coarse, good and non-good, name and form, all of these will cease here. Venerable one, what is the name of that Bhikshu? The Blessed One instructed, "He is called the householder's son Asvajit." Regarding not fearing faults by looking at me, and so on. The setting is in Shravasti. What should be controlled is

There are three types. What are the three that should be subdued? They are subduing the world, subduing oneself, and subduing the Dharma. What is subduing the world? Here, a noble disciple in a monastery, or under a tree, or in an empty room, thus truly trains: This world is extremely numerous. The shapes of this world are extremely numerous. This extremely numerous world and the extremely numerous shapes of the world, possessing magical powers and great strength, with divine eyes, can see the minds of others far away, but those people cannot see them. Having pervaded mind with mind, they thoroughly understand mind with mind. Here, the monastic community of the Blessed One's disciples, possessing magical powers and great strength, with divine eyes and knowledge of others' minds, can see people far away, but those people cannot see them. Having pervaded mind with mind, they also thoroughly understand mind with mind. If I were to engage in sinful, unwholesome thoughts mixed with attachment, he would recognize me, he would see me, and having recognized and seen me, he would say: A certain son of good family, having gone forth from home into homelessness out of faith, engages in sinful, unwholesome thoughts mixed with attachment. They will see and speak of these things. Whether those people recognize me, whether those people see me, whether my own nature recognizes my own nature and sees my own nature, whether my own nature recognizes my own nature and my own nature sees my own nature, and fully understands, they will say so. Having recognized thus and seen thus, they will initiate diligence. Without shrinking back, with a body that is extremely tamed, persevering and closely establishing mindfulness. Possessing correct knowledge, establishing the mind equally, and becoming one-pointed, he subdues the world itself, abandoning the unwholesome and cultivating the wholesome. This is called subduing the world. What is subduing oneself? Here, a noble disciple in a monastery, or under a tree, or in an empty room, thus truly follows: In that solitary monastery, moment by moment, special awakenings arise.
