Know that where these four, earth, water, fire, and wind, cease without remainder, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder, and come to an end? Bhikshu, we also do not know or see where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder and come to an end. However, there are the gods of the Thirty-three, who are far superior to us, and they know where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder and come to an end. Then that bhikshu disappeared from among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings and went to the Thirty-three. Then that bhikshu said to the gods of the Thirty-three: Know that where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, cease without remainder, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder, and come to an end? Bhikshu, we also do not know or see where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder and come to an end. However, we have Indra, the lord of the gods, who is far superior and most excellent to us, and he knows where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, cease without remainder, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder, and come to an end. Then that bhikshu went near to where Indra, the lord of the gods, was, and having gone near, he said to Indra, the lord of the gods: Kausika, know that where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, cease without remainder, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder, and come to an end? Bhikshu, I also do not know or see where these four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, cease completely without remainder, are extinguished and exhausted without remainder, and come to an end, but I have one who is far superior and most excellent, the one without strife.

Thus, one should know where these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—cease completely, vanish completely, are entirely exhausted, and are completely cut off. Then, that monk went successively to the gods of the Thirty-three and Indra, the lord of the gods; likewise, to the Yama gods and the sons of the Yama gods; the Tuṣita gods and the sons of the Tuṣita gods; the Nirmāṇarati gods and the sons of the Nirmāṇarati gods; the Paranirmita-vaśavartin gods and the sons of the lordly gods; among the sons of the gods of the Brahma hosts. Then, that monk said this to the gods of the Brahma hosts: 'Friends, where will these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—completely cease, completely vanish, be exhausted, and be cut off?' They said this: 'Monk, we also do not know or see where these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—will completely cease, completely vanish, be exhausted, and be cut off. However, we have one who is most distinguished, most excellent, Brahmā, Mahābrahmā, the powerful one, the creator, the giver, the bestower, the great Brahmā who is like the father of things; he has nothing that he does not know, does not see, does not understand, and does not recognize. He knows where these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—will completely cease, completely vanish, and be cut off.' 'Where does that Brahmā reside, where does he dwell?' 'Monk, we also do not know or see where Brahmā resides and where he dwells. However, if there is light, Brahmā will appear.' Then, light appeared to that assembly, and Brahmā, a youth with five faces, appeared with a color like that of a young child. Then, that monk said this to Brahmā: 'Brahmā, where will these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—completely cease, completely vanish, be exhausted, and be cut off?'

He said, "I am Brahma! I am the Great Brahma! I am the Almighty! I am the Creator! I am the Transformer! I am the Giver! I am the Originator! I am like the father of all things!" Brahma, whether you are Brahma or not, whether you are the Almighty and the Creator or not, whether you are the Transformer or not, whether you are the Giver and the Originator and like the father of all things or not, I am not asking you these things. I am asking you this: Where will these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—completely cease without residue? Where will they completely disappear, be extinguished, and come to an end? That is what I am asking." Two or three times, Brahma said to that monk, "Monk, I am Brahma, the Great Brahma..." (content repeated) ...extensively, up to the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. Then, Brahma took the hand of that monk, went to a secluded place, and said, "Monk, all the retinue of Brahma know that I, Brahma, have nothing that I do not know, nothing that I do not see, nothing that I do not perceive, and not even a little that I do not understand. However, I do not know, nor do I see, where these four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—completely cease without residue, where they completely disappear, are extinguished, and come to an end. However, monk, you have committed a fault, a great fault, by abandoning the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, and thinking to ask me such a question? Monk, however, the Blessed One is dwelling in Sravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. Monk, if you wish, go to where the Blessed One is, and having gone there, ask the Blessed One such a question. The Blessed One will answer you truthfully without doubt. Then, that monk disappeared from the world of Brahma and came to Sravasti.
