are completely fulfilled, just like before. Similarly, the fruit of entering the stream, the fruit of once returning, the fruit of not returning, the realm of magical powers, the divine ear, the recollection of past lives, knowing death and birth, monks, alas, I am liberated from the defilements, without defilements, mind liberated, wisdom liberated, having realized it myself in the present dharma, manifestly appearing, wisdom complete, my birth is exhausted, the pure conduct is established, what should be done is done, there is no more future existence, and completely fulfilling all the precepts, possessing unfeigned meditation and wisdom, increasing the dwelling of emptiness, being related to one's own benefit and subsequently attaining it, even if possessing the discernment that the wise do not despise, one might think, what could be wrong, thus he spoke. Intermediate verses: Showing and wisdom, alms and, displeasure and fear, contemplation and patience and meditation, liberation fruit and six superknowledges. This woodpile has various elements, and so on. The origin of the story is in Rājagṛha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Then, the Venerable Śāriputra, together with many monks, in the morning, having put on his robes and holding his bowl, descended from Vulture Peak Mountain and entered Rājagṛha for alms. The Venerable Śāriputra saw a large woodpile in the middle of the road. Having seen it, he left the road and sat down in front of the monastic community of monks, spreading out a seat as appropriate. The Venerable Śāriputra called out to the monks: Venerable ones, if any monk possesses meditation, possesses magical powers, and has attained mastery over the mind, then if he wishes this woodpile to become earth, it will become so. Otherwise, it will not. Why is that? Because this woodpile has the earth element. Therefore, if any monk possesses meditation, possesses magical powers, and has attained mastery over the mind, then if he wishes this woodpile to become earth, it will become so, otherwise it will not. Venerable ones, which monk

If a monk who possesses meditative concentration, possesses miraculous powers, and has gained mastery over his mind, wishes to transform a piece of wood into water, fire, wind, or gold, it can be so; otherwise, it cannot. Why is that? Because this piece of wood contains the element of gold. Therefore, if a monk who possesses meditative concentration, possesses miraculous powers, and has gained mastery over his mind, wishes to transform this piece of wood into gold, it can be so; otherwise, it cannot. O you who are endowed with life, if a monk who possesses meditative concentration, possesses miraculous powers, and has gained mastery over his mind, wishes to transform this piece of wood into anything, it can be transformed into that; otherwise, it cannot. Why is that? Because this piece of wood contains various elements. Therefore, if a monk who possesses meditative concentration, possesses miraculous powers, and has gained mastery over his mind, wishes to transform this piece of wood into any of the various elements, it can be transformed into that; otherwise, it cannot. O you who are endowed with life, the realm of meditative concentration for those who possess meditative concentration, and the realm of miraculous powers for those who possess miraculous powers, are inconceivable in this way. O you who are endowed with life, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: "Whoever will become one who possesses meditative concentration, possesses miraculous powers, and has gained mastery over his mind, should train in this way." Thus he spoke. Didn't the sutra say, "The body is extremely pliable"? And so forth. The basis of the story is in Shravasti. Then, many monks dressed in their robes in the morning, took their bowls, and entered Shravasti for alms. Then, many monks thought to themselves: "After dawn, we will go for alms in Shravasti. Where should we go comfortably to the hermitage of other non-Buddhist ascetics?" Then, many monks went near to where the hermitage of other non-Buddhist ascetics was. Having gone near, they, together with the non-Buddhist ascetics,

Sa. Those many monks, the renunciates of other non-Buddhist sects, said this: "Your ascetic Gautama's (Shakyamuni Buddha) disciples, monks, come here! Abandon the five hindrances that afflict the mind, weaken wisdom, and obstruct the path to non-Nirvana, and let the mind dwell well on the four mindfulnesses. Practice the seven branches of enlightenment." We also say to the disciples: "Come here! Abandon the five hindrances that afflict the mind, weaken wisdom, and obstruct the path to Nirvana, and let the mind dwell well on the four mindfulnesses. Practice the seven branches of enlightenment." Like the Dharma taught by the ascetic Gautama, and the Dharma taught by us, what is the difference between you and this? What different thoughts and different reasons are there?" When they said this, those many monks remained silent. Then, those many monks neither rejoiced in what the renunciates of other non-Buddhist sects said, nor were they angry. Without rejoicing or being angry, they rose from their seats and left. Then, those many monks begged for alms in Shravasti, finished their meal, put away their bowls, placed their robes and bowls to one side, washed their feet, and came to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, those many monks spoke righteous words together with those other non-Buddhist renunciates, and in detail told the Blessed One what had happened. After they had reported this, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, you should say this to those other non-Buddhist renunciates: The Blessed One did not speak of the five hindrances, but rather of the five hindrances..."
