Then the Blessed One spoke this verse: Just as an egg-born breaks the eggshell, The inner self dwells in equality, With different and same actions, The Able One relinquished the formations of existence. Whatever I have meditated on these four feet of miraculous power, etc. The context is in Shravasti. Monks, the practice of the four feet of miraculous power will be explained. Listen well, etc., as before. Monks, how does one practice the four feet of miraculous power? Here, a monk possesses the samadhi of desire, engages in diligent effort, dwells in a secluded place, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, transforms by completely abandoning. Desire does not shrink nor scatter, the mind is focused, not scattered outward, past and future thoughts do not arise, upper and lower thoughts do not obscure the mind, the mind arises with light and focus, thinking thus: May darkness not arise in my mind. Monks, the samadhi of diligence, mind, and contemplation, possessing the miraculous foot of diligent effort, dwells in a secluded place, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, transforms by completely abandoning, acts without shrinking or scattering, the mind is focused, not scattered outward, past and future thoughts, upper and lower thoughts do not obscure the mind, the mind arises with light and focus, thinking thus: May darkness not arise in my mind. Monks, thus one practices the four feet of miraculous power. Monks, and likewise, having practiced the four feet of miraculous power, after practicing, with those four feet of miraculous power, one experiences various miraculous realms, such as the divine eye and ear, remembering past lives, knowing death and birth, the distinctions of mind, and such as the exhaustion of defilements. Monks, my miraculous

It is said that if one desires to remain for an eon or more than an eon, it can be done with these four legs. The story of the karma that will experience happiness, etc., is in Shravasti. Monks, uninstructed ordinary people think that the body born of the four great elements can be free from desire and liberated, but not from consciousness. Why is that? Because the body of the four great elements can be placed and destroyed. However, for those uninstructed ordinary people, they do not see disgust, detachment, and cessation in what is called mind and intellect, and what is called consciousness. Why is that? Monks, uninstructed ordinary people constantly guard, protect, approach, and grasp day and night, thinking, "This is me, this is my self." Therefore, they do not see disgust, detachment, and cessation in these things. Monks, uninstructed ordinary people consider the body of the four great elements to be superior, but not consciousness. Why is that? Because the body of the four great elements can be properly cared for and guarded, and can exist for ten years, twenty years, thirty years, forty years, fifty years, a hundred years, or even longer. However, what is called mind, intellect, or consciousness is destroyed day and night, destroyed in every moment, instant, and short time, and many different forms arise and cease. For example, when a monkey wanders in the forest, it grabs one branch, lets go of it, and grabs another branch. Similarly, what is called mind, intellect, or consciousness is destroyed day and night, destroyed in every moment, instant, and short time, and many different forms arise and cease. Arising and ceasing. Monks, therefore, the noble hearers who are taught think well and pay attention to dependent origination.

And he contemplates, thus: "Because this exists, this arises; because this is born, this is born." Like this: Dependent on the touch that is felt as pleasure, feeling arises. When feeling pleasure, one feels the feeling of pleasure, and knows the feeling of pleasure as it really is. Then, that touch that is felt as pleasure ceases, and the feeling that arises dependent on the touch that is felt as pleasure, pleasure also ceases, and is pacified, becomes cool, and disappears. Just like the feeling of pleasure, the feeling of pain, and the feeling of joy, and the feeling of displeasure, and the feeling of displeasure, and dependent on the touch that is felt as equanimity, feeling arises. When feeling equanimity, one feels the feeling of equanimity, and knows the feeling of equanimity as it really is. Then, that touch that is felt as equanimity ceases, and the feeling that arises dependent on the touch that is felt as equanimity, equanimity also ceases, and is pacified, becomes cool, and disappears. He thinks thus: "What is the cause of these feelings? From where do they truly arise? From where do they completely arise?" He thinks thus: "These feelings are caused by touch, they truly arise from touch, they arise from touch, they completely arise from touch." When this and this feeling truly arise, this and this touch also truly arise, and when this and this touch cease, this and this feeling also cease, and are pacified, cool, and disappear. Monks, the noble disciple who sees thus, even becomes weary of the body, and weariness arises towards feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, or he becomes dispassionate, and being dispassionate, he is liberated, and being liberated, he sees the wisdom of liberation, and says: "My birth is exhausted, the pure conduct has been practiced, what had to be done has been done, I do not know of anything else beyond this existence." Thus the Blessed One taught. Now, if one asks: "How are they called 'men'?" and so on, from where does it arise? In the *Many Elements Discourse*, it has been explained at the end of the *Condensed Exposition*, this is the *Abhidharmakosha*.
