Due to birth, there is aging and death; due to aging and death, there is suffering; due to suffering, there is faith, discipline, attention, mindfulness, awareness, guarding the senses, guarding the precepts, absence of suffering, joy, great joy, great purity, happiness, samadhi, birth, detachment from desire, and cessation, thus attaining Nirvana. The Buddha spoke thus. In the sutra, it is said: "For the feeling of pleasure, desire increases; for the feeling of pain, hatred increases," and so on. As it is said in the Vinaya, at the end of the third verse of the Vinaya verses, in the Bhikshuni Dharma Giving Sutra, it is said in the first chapter of the Abhidharma Kosha: "The cessation of individual analysis is the individuality of detachment." It should be viewed as such. That which is not physical ease is called the root of suffering, and so on. The story takes place in Shravasti. Monks, these five are the five roots. What are the five? They are the root of pleasure, the root of pain, the root of mental pleasure, the root of mental displeasure, and the root of equanimity. What is the root of pleasure? It is that which arises from the touch of experiencing pleasure, the physical and mental ease and happiness, knowing and feeling, this is called the root of pleasure. What is the root of pain? It is that which arises from the touch of experiencing pain, the physical and mental non-ease and pain, this is called the root of pain. What is the root of mental pleasure? It is that which arises from the touch of experiencing mental pleasure, the mental ease and happiness, knowing and feeling, this is called the root of mental pleasure. What is the root of mental displeasure? It is that which arises from the touch of experiencing mental displeasure, the mental non-ease and pain, this is called the root of mental displeasure. What is the root of equanimity? It is that which arises from the touch of experiencing equanimity, the physical and mental neither ease nor non-ease, neither pleasure nor pain, knowing and feeling, this is called the root of equanimity.

Thus it was declared. The third is called the stainless one. The setting is in Shravasti. There are three faculties: the faculty of making the unknowing know everything, the faculty of knowing everything, and the faculty of possessing all knowledge. The one who is learning, enters the straight path, conforms to the noble path, and guards one's own mind. This is the first knowledge of cessation, then the supreme all-knowing, then from the all-knowing, the knowledge of liberation arises. All afflictions are exhausted, the unwavering liberation, its faculties are perfect, and the faculties become peaceful. Victorious over the armies of Mara, is the one who holds the last body. Thus it was declared. After thus establishing the noble person, etc., the setting is in Shravasti. Monks, what are the five faculties? They are: the faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, and the faculty of wisdom. Monks, when these five faculties are sharp and complete, one will become an Arhat liberated by wisdom. Weaker and duller than that, one will become a Non-Returner. Duller and weaker than that, one is called a Follower of Faith. Monks, for what is it complete and makes it complete, and a part and a part, these five faculties are called having fruits. If these five faculties do not exist at all in every way, I say that he dwells in the ranks of external ordinary people. Thus it was said. The setting is in Shravasti. Monks, the five faculties are from the faculty of faith to the faculty of wisdom. These faculties are strong, sharp, and complete, and are called Arhats liberated from both parts. Smaller and weaker than that, one is called an Arhat liberated by wisdom. Smaller and weaker than that, one is called a Body Witness. Smaller and weaker than that, one is called a Dharma-natured one who completely passes into Nirvana in the intermediate state. Smaller and weaker than that
