When the mind is detached from desire and liberated from these four abodes, then equanimity becomes completely pure, completely refined, and becomes a special state. He will think thus: 'My feeling and equanimity are so pure and refined that I cultivate the sphere of infinite space, and meditate on the mind in the same way, and relying on it, abide in equanimity, connected with it, attached to it, and with it as the cause, I will abide in the sphere of infinite space.' He will also think thus: 'My feeling and equanimity are so pure and refined that I approach and abide in the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and meditate on the mind in the same way, and relying on it, abide in equanimity, connected with it, attached to it, and with it as the cause, I will abide in the sphere of neither existence nor non-existence.' Just as a goldsmith or a goldsmith's apprentice, skilled in the art, fully understands the art of gilding, and does whatever he wants to do. If he wants to make an earring, or a headdress, or a belt, or a necklace, or a ring, or make ornaments with gold or silver, he will do it carefully. Similarly, he will think thus: 'My feeling and equanimity are so pure and refined that I abide in the sphere of infinite space, and meditate on the mind in the same way, and relying on it, abide in equanimity, connected with it, attached to it, and with it as the cause, I will abide in the sphere of infinite space.'

That which, based on equanimity, abides in the sphere of infinite space, is also conditioned. Whatever is conditioned should not be delighted in, should not be spoken of, should not be clung to, should not be intensely clung to and abided in. Knowing this well, the mind becomes detached from the sphere of infinite space. He thinks thus: That which, based on equanimity, abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, is also conditioned. Whatever is conditioned should not be delighted in, should not be spoken of, should not be clung to, should not be intensely clung to and abided in. Knowing this well, the mind becomes detached from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Bhikshu, this is called a wise and cautious one. Bhikshu, because the mind is detached and liberated from these four spheres, he does not distinguish the mind's activity as being with or without substance. When he is aware of and feels the end of the body, he truly knows: This is being aware of and feeling the end of the body. When he is aware of and feels the end of life, he truly knows: This is being aware of and feeling the end of life. When the body is destroyed, at the end of death, he knows all this: all is completely stopped, all is completely extinguished, completely exhausted, and completely purified. For example, a lamp arises from sesame oil and a wick. If someone does not nourish it with sesame oil from time to time and does not draw near to the wick, the lamp's fuel is exhausted, and it will quickly go out. Similarly, when he is aware of and feels the end of the body, he truly knows: This is being aware of and feeling the end of the body. When he is aware of and feels the end of death, he truly knows: This is being aware of and feeling the end of life. When the body is destroyed, at the end of death, he knows all this: all is completely stopped, all is completely extinguished, completely exhausted, and completely purified. Seeing thus and knowing thus, the mind is liberated from the outflows of desire, and the mind is liberated from the outflows of existence and ignorance.
