and the dharmas with outflows, the dharmas without outflows should be taught. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. What are the dharmas with outflows? Monks, the eye and form, and likewise eye consciousness, up to eye contact, and likewise the feeling born from eye contact, pleasant feeling and painful feeling, and neither pleasant nor painful feeling, up to the ear, nose, tongue, body, worldly mind, dharma, and mind consciousness, up to mind contact, and the feeling born from mind contact, pleasant or painful feeling, or neither pleasant nor painful feeling, this is called having outflows. What are the dharmas without outflows? The supramundane mind, dharma, and mind consciousness, up to the feeling born from mind contact, pleasant or painful feeling, or neither pleasant nor painful feeling, these are called dharmas without outflows. Monks, I have taught you the dharmas with and without outflows, this has been extensively explained. Therefore, from where does the ground with investigation and analysis come? It comes from the Vibhajyavāda. One should speak without investigation. From where does this come? It comes from the Abhidhamma. Those that appear in the Sutras are for the purpose of taking them as the basis itself, and the characteristics of hardness, etc. Here, at the end of the 'Intention' in the Middle Length Discourses, in the Sutra like the footprint of an elephant, how does one temporarily take the aggregate of form? Whatever form is, all of it is the four great elements and what is made from the four great elements. What are the four great elements? The earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element. What is the earth element? Venerables, the earth element is twofold: the inner self and the outer. The earth element of the inner self and the outer. What is the earth element of the inner self? Whatever in this body is called the inner self, etc., up to the external, wind and what has become wind,

Beginning with "action," and up to "this is the external wind element," one should only refer to the sutra on how to distinguish the six elements. In the sutra, "as the sutra says," etc., regarding the individual birthplaces, it should be viewed as previously written. Then, regarding "what is the lump of flesh of the eye," etc., it is as stated in the sutra of the example of clapping hands previously. Monks, this person is a person of the six elements, so it is said. The Blessed One traveled through the country of Magadha, gradually going to the king's place. Then, the Blessed One went near to where the potter Bharaga was, and having arrived, said this to the potter Bharaga: Bharaga, if I do not harm you, may I stay one night in one side of your inner house? God, you do not harm me, but a renunciate has come here before and stayed one night. If it does not harm the venerable one, then may the god dwell happily and peacefully as you please. Then, the Blessed One went to the house of the potter Dharaga. At that time, the venerable Purna Kashyapa had come to the house of the potter Bharaga and stayed one night. Then, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Purna Kashyapa: Monk, if I do not harm you, may I stay one night in one side of the house of the potter Bharaga? Also, look at the potter Bharaga. Venerable one, you do not harm me, because the house of the potter Bharaga is large, and I have already laid out a grass mat, so there, how can you dwell comfortably elsewhere? Then, the Blessed One washed his feet outside the house, entered the house, and sat cross-legged on the grass mat he had laid out himself, straightened his body, and remained mindful. The venerable Purna Kashyapa also washed his feet outside the house, entered the house, and sat cross-legged on the grass mat that had been laid out, straightened his body, and entered mindfully. On that day, the Blessed One and the venerable Purna Kashyapa mostly remained in the silence of the noble ones. Then, the Blessed One thought in this way in the last watch of the night: This renunciate...

It is wonderful that one abides in such tranquility. What praise do you have for this one who has gone forth as I have? From whom did you go forth? What Dharma do you delight in? One should ask thus. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Pukkusaati: Bhikkhu, who is your teacher? Relying on whom did you go forth? What Dharma do you delight in? The venerable one replied: The ascetic named Gotama, the son of the Sakyas, having shaved his hair and beard from the Sakya clan, having donned the ochre robes, having gone forth from home to homelessness with faith, the Blessed One who awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, is my teacher. I went forth from him, and I delight in his Dharma. Bhikkhu, do you see this as slander? The venerable one replied: It is not so. Rather, I have heard that the Blessed One is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened one, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the well-gone, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed one, the tamer of beings, the guide, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: This son of good family has gone forth in my teaching, so I should teach him the Dharma. Having thought thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Pukkusaati: Bhikkhu, it is good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, the meaning is excellent, the words are excellent, unmixed, complete, pure, the holy life, clear. That is, I will teach the Dharma category called the six elements analysis. Listen well and hold it in your mind, and I will explain it. What is the Dharma category of the six elements analysis? Bhikkhu, this person is a six-element being. From what does the mind not approach defilement, namely the six sense spheres of contact, and the eighteen mental activities, and the four blessings. If one enters into the undefiled, it is said that the mind is close to peace and perfect enlightenment. This is the instruction: to guard wisdom from carelessness, to cultivate emptiness, and to rely on the path of meditation.
