This being, that becomes; From the arising of this, that arises. Thus, conditioned by ignorance, volitional formations (arise); conditioned by volitional formations, consciousness (arises); conditioned by consciousness, name and form (arise); conditioned by name and form, the six sense bases (arise); conditioned by the six sense bases, contact (arises); conditioned by contact, feeling (arises); conditioned by feeling, craving (arises); conditioned by craving, grasping (arises); conditioned by grasping, becoming (arises); conditioned by becoming, birth (arises); conditioned by birth, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair arise, and thus arises this entire mass of suffering. This not being, that does not become; From the cessation of this, that ceases. Thus, from the cessation of ignorance comes the cessation of volitional formations; from the cessation of volitional formations comes the cessation of consciousness; from the cessation of consciousness comes the cessation of name and form; from the cessation of name and form comes the cessation of the six sense bases; from the cessation of the six sense bases comes the cessation of contact; from the cessation of contact comes the cessation of feeling; from the cessation of feeling comes the cessation of craving; from the cessation of craving comes the cessation of grasping; from the cessation of grasping comes the cessation of becoming; from the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth; from the cessation of birth comes the cessation of aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. Thus comes the cessation of this entire mass of suffering. Ananda, by this alone one becomes skilled in dependent origination. Bhikshu, if by this alone one becomes skilled in dependent origination, then by how much does a Bhikshu become skilled in what is possible and what is impossible? Ananda, it is the thorough knowledge of what is impossible as impossible, and what is possible as possible, just as it is. Ananda, there is no possibility, no opportunity, that the ripening of misconduct by body, speech, and mind will lead to what is desired, to what is pleasant, to what is agreeable, to what is pleasing. This is impossible, there is no opportunity. Ananda, there is a possibility, an opportunity, that the ripening of good conduct by body, speech, and mind will lead to what is undesired, to what is unpleasant, to what is disagreeable, to what is displeasing.
