it will become. Monks, if there were no past form, then the noble disciple who possesses hearing would not be able to attain equanimity towards past form. Because past forms exist, therefore the noble disciple who possesses hearing will be able to attain equanimity towards future form. Monks, if there were no future form, then the noble disciple who possesses hearing would not be displeased with future form. Because future forms exist, therefore the noble disciple who possesses hearing will be displeased with future form. Monks, if there were no presently arising form, then the noble disciple who possesses hearing would not be able to attain revulsion, detachment, and cessation towards presently arising form, which is peaceful. Because presently arising forms exist, therefore the noble disciple who possesses hearing will attain revulsion, detachment, and cessation towards presently arising form. Monks, similarly, if there were no past feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, as mentioned before. Monks, the noble disciple who possesses hearing would not be able to attain equanimity towards past consciousness, as mentioned before. Thus he spoke. Secondly, 'consciousness arises in dependence' refers to the verses summarizing the six sense-spheres. 'Contact, name, and desire, And the two of negligence.' This is stated in the second sutra, and in the third chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, 'The six contacts arise together.' And, 'These three dharmas are related, gathered, and assembled.' See as it is written there. Furthermore, speaking according to the wishes of the wandering ascetics. The Blessed One was residing in the Bamboo Grove, Kalandaka, in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). At that time, the venerable Shariputra was dwelling, relying on Vulture Peak Mountain (Gṛdhrakūṭa), in Rajagriha. Then, many wandering ascetics came near to where the venerable Shariputra was. Having come near, they exchanged joyful greetings with the venerable Shariputra, and felt comfortable.

Having various topics of idle talk, they gathered in one place. After gathering in one place, those many wandering ascetics said this to the venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, what does your teacher say and explain? My teacher says and explains this: If some have done and accumulated, by its cause and condition, after the body breaks up, immediately after death, the deeds of immediate retribution that will cause them to be born in hells are these five. What are the five? Killing the father, killing the mother, killing an Arhat, causing dissension in the Sangha, and with malicious intent drawing blood from the body of the Thus-Gone One. Shariputra, if those that have passed away, are exhausted, ceased, separated, and completely transformed do not exist, then intentionally causing the death of father, mother, and Arhat, causing dissension in the Sangha, and with malicious intent drawing blood from the body of the Thus-Gone One, by its cause and condition, there is no possibility of being born in the hell of sentient beings immediately after the body breaks up. Then, those Brahmin wandering ascetics neither explicitly rejoiced in the words spoken by the venerable Shariputra, nor were they angry, but rose from their seats and left. Then, not long after those wandering ascetics had left, the venerable Shariputra went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he sat down to one side. Then, the venerable Shariputra fully reported to the Blessed One all that had happened, including the other topics that were discussed with the Brahmin wandering ascetics. After reporting this, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, those Brahmin wandering ascetics spoke words that were not considered and were inconsistent, each scrutinizing separately. Foolish, ignorant, and unwise children would say this: Those deeds that have passed away, are exhausted, ceased, separated, and completely transformed do not exist. Here, some intentionally cause the death of father, mother, and Arhat, cause dissension in the Sangha, and with malicious intent draw blood from the body of the Thus-Gone One.
