It should be said: "The Blessed One has predicted in one aspect that 'This is suffering, the noble truth.' This is the origin of suffering. This is the cessation of suffering. This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering, the noble truth.' The Blessed One has predicted these in one aspect," it should be said. "Monks, if other wanderers of different sects ask you, 'Why does your ascetic Gautama predict these teachings in one aspect?' you should answer them thus: 'These teachings are necessary for meaning, necessary for Dharma, necessary for the holy life, and useful for direct knowledge, realization, and the attainment of Nirvana.' Therefore, the Blessed One has predicted these," it should be said. Thus spoke the Blessed One. The reason for saying "predicting in one aspect" is that the origin is in Shravasti. There are four ways of answering questions. What are the four? Answering a question asked in one aspect, answering a question asked separately, answering after asking a question, and answering after establishing separately. "Predicting in one aspect" itself, and "separately" as well. "Answering after asking a question" is the third, and "establishing separately" is the fourth. These four questions and predictions each have their own order. Knowing and speaking like this, that monk is wise. The nature of Dharma is difficult to understand and difficult to endure, profound and difficult to see. The wise, through correct wisdom, can distinguish between meaning and non-meaning, thereby completely abandoning non-meaning and completely accepting meaningful things. That teaching of realizing meaning enables the wise to attain Nirvana. Thus spoke the Blessed One. The reason for saying "Monks, if the past form does not exist" is that the origin is in Shravasti. Monks, if past and future forms are impermanent, then what need is there to mention the present form? Monks, noble disciples who have heard and see thus, obtain abandonment of past forms; do not rejoice in future forms; and obtain weariness, detachment, and cessation from present forms.
