Therefore, the faculties and consciousness of this person should be known as such, and the causes of the arising of all future phenomena should also be known as such. Venerable Ananda, there are four types of individuals. What are the four? They are: those who are incurable, appearing as curable; those who are curable, appearing as incurable; those who are incurable, appearing as incurable; and those who are curable, appearing as curable. Thus it was said. As it is said, in the Brahma-jala Sutra, for those who realize the past extreme and speak of permanence, and those who speak of one part as permanent, and those who say that everything arises without a cause, for those who are free from desire, the view that focuses on the desire realm arises. At the end of the Vinaya Pitaka, in the third chapter of the Abhidharma-kosa, the sixty-two views are written there as they arise from the Brahma-jala Sutra. The aggregate is the five aggregates of grasping. The story takes place in Sravasti. Monks, I have taught the view of the self, the arising of the view of the self, the cessation of the view of the self, and the path leading to the cessation of the view of the self. Listen well and pay attention, and I will explain. What is the view of the self? It is the five aggregates of grasping. What are the five? They are: the aggregate of form, feeling, perception, formation, and the aggregate of consciousness. What is the arising of the view of the self? It is the craving that is accompanied by joy and desire, which causes rebirth, and rejoices in this and that. What is the cessation of the view of the self? It is when this craving, which is accompanied by joy and desire, which causes rebirth, and rejoices in this and that, is completely abandoned, without remainder, extinguished, free from desire, ceased, and pacified. What is the path leading to the cessation of the view of the self? It is the eightfold noble path. Namely: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Monks, the view of the self and the

I will explain in detail what I have said about the arising of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path leading to the cessation of suffering. Thus spoke the Buddha. The essence of this Discourse on Giving Dharma will be explained with words, letters, and other definitive terms. Monks, any renunciant or Brahmin who truly observes and sees anything as "I"—all of that is clinging to the five aggregates of clinging. What are the five? Those renunciants or Brahmins who see form as self, form as related to self, self as in form, or form as in self—they truly observe and see in this way. Those renunciants or Brahmins who see feeling, perception, mental formations, or consciousness as self, consciousness as related to self, self as in consciousness, or consciousness as in self—they truly observe and see in this way. Monks, those uninstructed ordinary people who think "I" is real, thinking "I" or "mine" is unwise. If they have not separated from the correct understanding of "mine" and "not mine," and have not separated from the understanding of "I," then their senses will waver and make contact. Monks, due to contact from any of these six sources of contact, those uninstructed ordinary people experience pleasure and pain, and cling to it. What are these six sources of contact? They are the source of contact arising from eye contact, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind contact. Monks, there is a realm of mind, phenomena, and ignorance. Monks, due to contact with ignorance, those uninstructed ordinary people experience feelings of "mine," "not mine," "I am here," "I am good," "I am bad," and "I am like..." They will experience what has not been abandoned and what has not been understood. Monks, they will abide in the six sources of contact. Furthermore, the excellent...
