Holding precepts as supreme, and doubt is in accordance with the lowest part. The words spoken by the Blessed One, I have taken hold of. Thus, venerable one, the five pervasive practices that the Blessed One spoke of as being in accordance with the lowest part, I have taken hold of. The mother of offerings, other non-Buddhist wanderers, thus think, and rebuke and belittle with the example of a child. Why is that? The mother of offerings, a young child who is sick and lying on a bed, I do not even think of what is called "desire," let alone the mind being completely entangled by desire and attachment? However, it is associated with the latent tendencies and subsequent actions of desire and attachment. Young children who are sick and lying on a bed do not even know what is called "sentient being," let alone anger entangling the mind and abiding? However, it is associated with the latent tendencies and subsequent actions of anger. Young children lying on a bed do not even know what is called "body," let alone the view of the aggregates of destruction entangling the mind and abiding? However, it is associated with the latent tendencies and subsequent actions of the view of the aggregates of destruction. Young children who are sick and lying on a bed do not even know what is called "discipline," let alone holding precepts and asceticism as supreme entangling the mind and abiding? However, it is associated with the latent tendencies and subsequent actions of holding precepts and asceticism as supreme. Young children who are sick and lying on a bed do not even know what is called "doubt," let alone the subtle increase of doubt entangling the mind and abiding? Thus, they rebuke and belittle other non-Buddhist wanderers. What do you think about this? After speaking thus, the venerable mother of offerings remained silent, dejected, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, discouraged, and abiding as such. At that time, the venerable Ananda was behind the Blessed One, holding a fan and fanning the Blessed One, and then the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: What

The Blessed One said to the monks, "The time to rely on the five bonds associated with the final existence is when this is the Blessed One, this is the Thus-Gone One. Having heard from the Blessed One, the monks should hold it. Ananda, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will speak. Ananda, here some dwell often with minds completely entangled by the attachment of desire. They do not truly know the correct arising of things born from being completely entangled by the attachment of desire. Therefore, they do not abandon with correct strength those bonds that are completely entangled by the attachment of desire and are associated with the final state. Ananda, here some dwell often with minds completely entangled by malice, the view of the aggregates, holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and doubt. They do not truly know the correct arising of things born from being completely entangled by doubt. Therefore, they do not abandon with correct strength those bonds that are completely entangled by doubt and are associated with the final state. Ananda, if one does not realize the path that will abandon the five bonds associated with the final existence, it is impossible and there is no opportunity to abandon the five bonds associated with the final existence. For example, Ananda, a person with eyes, seeking and desiring the essence of a tree, enters a forest carrying a sharp axe. There he sees a large tree with roots, leaves, branches, twigs, flowers, and fruits, and then says, 'Without cutting the roots and the top of this tree, I will take the branches, leaves, flowers, and essence and leave.' One should say to him, 'Do not say that.' Why? Because it is impossible and there is no opportunity. If someone does not cut the roots of the tree but wants to take the branches, leaves, flowers, and essence and leave, it is impossible and there is no opportunity. Ananda, similarly, if one realizes

If he has not realized the path by which the five fetters corresponding to the final part can be abandoned, then it is impossible and there is no opportunity to abandon the five fetters corresponding to the final part by that path. Venerable Ānanda, if one realizes a certain path, by which the five fetters corresponding to the final part can be abandoned, then it is possible and there is an opportunity to abandon the five fetters corresponding to the final part by that path. Venerable Ānanda, for example, a man with eyes, seeking heartwood and striving for it, takes a sharp axe and enters the forest, and there he sees a large tree with roots, a trunk, branches, leaves, and fruits, and then he says: I will cut off the roots of this tree, cut off the top, and then take away the branches, leaves, flowers, and heartwood. It should be said: That is so. Why is that? This is possible and there is an opportunity. Because that man cuts off the roots of the tree, cuts off the top, and then takes away the branches, leaves, flowers, and heartwood, this is possible and there is an opportunity. Venerable Ānanda, similarly, if he realizes by obtaining the path that by a certain path the fetters corresponding to the final part can be abandoned, then by realizing that path, the fetters corresponding to the final part can be abandoned, this is possible and there is an opportunity. Venerable Ānanda, what path is realized by which the fetters corresponding to the final part are abandoned? Venerable Ānanda, here, some do not often abide in a mind completely entangled by desire and lust, and he truly knows the faults arising from the entanglement of desire and lust, and then he powerfully and well subdues those subtle predispositions of desire and lust, and abandons everything including the subtle predispositions. Venerable Ānanda, here, some do not often abide in a mind completely entangled by hatred, the view of the aggregates, the supreme adherence to morality and asceticism, and doubt, and he truly knows the faults arising from the complete entanglement of doubt.
