If one gives, it is called the receiver of the gift. If someone does not understand the law, does not know the Dharma, does not believe in the results of karma, and gives to those who have broken their vows, this giving will not bring great rewards. If someone observes the precepts, understands the Dharma, believes in the ripening of karma, and gives to those who observe the precepts, this giving is said to have great rewards. If one has deep faith in the results of karma, and gives to male or female servants, or the poor, and all non-relatives, this giving is praised by the noble ones. If someone's body, speech, and mind are restrained and pure, begs for alms with outstretched hands, behaves frugally, and gives to the desireless with a desireless mind, this is the best of material giving. Thus it is said. In the middle summary, it says: mindful and patient, without laziness, upright in conduct, honest in speech, and pure in morality. Similarly, regarding the object of merit arising from material things, in the seventh sutra of the Madhyama Agama, in the treasury of extraction, one should look at how the word "increase" is written there. Regarding the distinction of benefiting, namely father and mother, it is said in the Jataka of the Friend's Daughter: For example, he gave four, eight, sixteen, and thirty-two Karshapanas, and kicked it with his foot, so he was honored by the consorts, the happiness and suffering of the wheel turning on his head were beneficial, and he experienced the results of harm, and so on. If one does beneficial things for most sentient beings but encounters harm, and clearly sees its undesirable results, in order to avoid this, the story of being born as a bear and a deer is given as an example. When the Bodhisattva was transformed into a bear, there was rain and wind for seven days. He put a piece of wood into his cave, embraced his body, dispelled the cold, and gave roots and fruits as food. When the rain and wind subsided, he joined his palms and said: Venerable, how should I repay your kindness? He said: I don't need you to repay any kindness, otherwise don't tell others, go wherever you want. Because of attachment to the two pieces of meat, he told the hunter, because he wanted to receive a share of the meat, so the outstretched hand would fall to the ground.

Furthermore, when the Bodhisattva was transformed into a deer named Golden Mountain, there was a man bound by strong ropes, carried away by the flood, uttering cries of distress. He said: What kind of reward do you desire? Do not tell anyone that I am here, and that will be doing a beneficial deed. That man, attached to wealth, was searching for King Independent Army. He said: I saw the lord of the heavenly deer. As he stretched out his arm, the fruit of harsh and cruel actions quickly manifested, and his arm fell to the ground. These two Jataka tales are from the Vinaya, telling how one does not understand celestial giving, does not recognize celestial giving, please listen. It is widely proclaimed in the summary called Indra's Great Army. The supreme is liberated by liberation. Verses are quoted from the end of the Gautama Sutra, and it is also recorded in the Jataka tales as follows: The Blessed One was residing in Shravasti. Then, a monk from another region came to Shravasti. He was not skilled in begging, thinking: From where will I obtain food? He did not find Samadhi. The Venerable Shariputra said to him: Venerable, with a small mind, engage in virtuous deeds, and I will give you food. Those monks, not free from desire, thought: How can we eat his food? They diligently practiced, realized Arhatship, and the Venerable Shariputra offered food. The Blessed One taught: Monks, in the past there was a king named Plague. He had a field of merit that made him victorious, and the gods said: Great King, there is a field of merit here that makes you victorious, please offer food. The king did not know where he was, and although the king gave offerings in sixty thousand cities for sixty thousand years, he did not offer any food to that Pratyekabuddha, because he begged in the morning and ate after that, it was not the time.
