If one gives to those who are detached, one should expect a hundred thousand kotis of results. If one gives to one who has entered in order to realize the fruit of stream-entry, the result is immeasurable. If one gives to one who has attained the fruit of stream-entry, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to one who has entered in order to realize the fruit of once-returning, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to a once-returner, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to one who has entered in order to realize the fruit of non-returning, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to a non-returner, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to one who has entered in order to realize the fruit of an arhat, it is exceedingly immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to an arhat, it is exceedingly immeasurable. What need is there to mention offering to a solitary buddha and a tathagata arhat samyaksambuddha? Ananda, these four kinds of giving are the four that purify giving. What are the four? There is giving where the giver is completely pure and the receiver is completely impure. There is giving where the receiver is completely pure and the giver is completely impure. There is giving where the giver is not completely pure and the receiver is not completely pure. There is giving where the giver is completely pure and the receiver is completely pure. What is giving where the giver is not completely pure and the receiver is not completely pure? Ananda, this is where the owner of the giving possesses morality, is restrained by vows, sees the doctrine, and having seen the fruit, views it thus and speaks thus: "Giving exists. If giving is given, the result exists." And the receiver has broken morality, is not restrained by vows, does not see the doctrine, and not having seen the fruit, views it thus and speaks thus: "Giving does not exist. If giving is given, the result does not exist." This is called giving where the giver is pure and the receiver is impure. What is giving where the receiver is completely pure and the giver is completely impure? Ananda, this is where the owner of the giving has broken morality, is not restrained by vows.

Not seeing the field and not seeing the fruit, thus looking and speaking thus: There is no giving. Giving, giving has no fruit that ripens. And the receiver possessing morality, restrained by vows, seeing the field and seeing the fruit, thus looking and speaking thus: There is giving. Giving produces fruit that ripens. This is the giving where the receiver is completely pure and the giver is not completely pure. What is the giving where the giver is also not completely pure and the receiver is also not completely pure? Ananda, this is the giver who is immoral and not restrained by vows, not seeing the field and not seeing the fruit, thus looking and speaking thus: There is no giving. Giving produces no fruit that ripens. And the receiver is also immoral and not restrained by vows, not seeing the field, thus looking and speaking thus: There is no giving. Giving produces no fruit that ripens. This is the giving where the giver is also not completely pure and the receiver is also not completely pure. And the receiver also possesses morality, restrained by vows, seeing the field and seeing the fruit, thus looking and speaking thus: There is giving. The fruit of giving ripens. This is the giving where the giver is also completely pure and the receiver is also completely pure. The Blessed One spoke thus, the Sugata declared thus, and the Teacher further declared thus: Whoever is moral and knows the Dharma, And believes in the ripening of karmic results, If one gives alms having abandoned morality, This giving, the almsgiver is said to be pure. Whoever is immoral but knows the Dharma, And does not believe in the ripening of karmic results, To the moral
