Holding a sword, weeping and shedding tears. Then, the village chief, holding a sword, weeping and shedding tears, folded his palms and prostrated before the Blessed One, saying, "Blessed One, I have committed a sin! Sugata, I have committed a sin! Like a child who is ignorant, unclear, and unskilled, I have slandered Gautama with false lies. Gautama, I have seen it as a sin, known it as a sin, and confessed it. Gautama, please have compassion on me!" Village chief, is it true that you have seen sin as sin and confessed it? Like a child who is unclear and unskilled, he slandered Gautama with false lies. Therefore, village chief, you saw it as unreasonable and confessed it after seeing it. If you then take the vow not to commit it again, it will not decline but increase, and virtuous dharmas will not deteriorate. Why is that? Village chief, some people see sin as sin, know it as sin, confess it, and then take the vow not to commit it again, it will not decline but increase, and virtuous dharmas will not deteriorate. Then, the village chief holding the sword was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Blessed One said, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. The so-called "objects of meritorious action are of three kinds" is said to have originated in Shravasti. Monks, there are these three objects of meritorious action. Which three? The object of meritorious action arising from giving, the object of meritorious action arising from morality, and the object of meritorious action arising from meditation. What is the object of meritorious action arising from giving? Some become givers, giving to renunciants or Brahmins, and to compassionate ones, beggars, and those who have entered the path, such as food, feasts, clothing, garlands, fragrances, ointments, beds, and lamps. This is called the object of meritorious action arising from giving. What is the object of meritorious action arising from morality? Here, some abandon killing and abstain from killing; without being given,

abstaining from taking what is not given, from sexual misconduct, from false speech, and from abandoning the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating liquor and concocted liquor, and from turning away from the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating liquor and concocted liquor. This is called the object of merit arising from morality. What is the object of merit arising from meditation? Here, some, with a mind accompanied by love, without enmity, without harm, vast, pervading all places, immeasurable, well cultivated, expand in one direction, pervade, practice and abide. Similarly, the second, third, and fourth, and all the worlds above, below, and in the ten directions, with a mind accompanied by love, without enmity, without harm, vast, pervading all places, immeasurable, well cultivated, expand, pervade, practice and abide. With a mind accompanied by compassion, joy, and equanimity, without enmity, without harm, vast, pervading all places, immeasurable, well cultivated, expand in one direction, pervade, practice and abide. Similarly, the second, third, and fourth, and all the realms of the world above, below, and directly opposite in the ten directions, with a mind accompanied by equanimity, without enmity, without harm, vast, pervading all places, immeasurable, well cultivated, pervade, practice and abide. This is called the object of merit arising from meditation. Monks, therefore, one should rely on and cultivate the object of merit arising from generosity, practice it many times, and one will obtain great enjoyment. One should rely on and cultivate the object of merit arising from morality, practice it many times, and one will be reborn in the heavens. One should rely on and cultivate the object of merit arising from meditation, practice it many times, and one will obtain liberation. The Blessed One thus declared. The Sugata having spoken thus. The Teacher further declared thus: The nature of the Dharma, which produces happiness in the beginning and the end, should be followed and practiced. Generosity and morality

Discipline, cultivate the mind of loving-kindness. Having cultivated these three dharmas, one will always obtain and possess happiness. The wise, harmless, and happy will be born in the world. After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks were delighted and rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said. Regarding the excellent benefactor's faith, etc., the setting for this is in Shravasti. Monks, the noble person's giving is of five kinds. What are the five? Monks, with excellent power, one gives with faith, respectfully, from one's own hand, in due time, and without harming others. Monks, what is the ripening of the fruit of the giver who gives with faith? Ananda, if one gives with faith, one becomes wealthy, with much wealth and great enjoyment, many necessities, many family members, much wealth, grain, gold, sesame, bean storehouses, many servants, maids, and laborers, and many friends, relatives, and in-laws. Monks, that is how the fruit of the giver who gives with faith ripens. Monks, what is the ripening of the fruit of the benefactor who gives respectfully? If one gives respectfully, one becomes wealthy, from becoming wealthy to having many friends, companions, relatives, and in-laws; parents, sons, servants, maids, and laborers will treat one with respect, and friends, companions, relatives, in-laws, kings, gods, acquaintances, monks, and Brahmins will treat one with respect. Monks, that is how the fruit of the giver who gives respectfully ripens. Monks, what is the ripening of the fruit of the giver who gives from their own hand? If one gives from one's own hand, one becomes wealthy, from becoming wealthy to having many friends, companions, relatives, and in-laws.
