That is, what is the reason for that? Like this, the view is virtuous. For example, if seeds of sugarcane, or seeds of rice, or seeds of grapes are sown in good and fertile fields, then the essence of the soil of each of them is absorbed by the soil, the essence of water by water, the essence of fire by fire, and the essence of wind by wind, and then they all become unbitter, unspicy, and have taste. What is the reason for that? Like this, the seed is unbitter, unspicy, and has taste. Similarly, right view is the supreme of faultlessness. The bodily actions of one who has right view, as well as the verbal and mental actions of that view, and striving for that purpose, prayers, and all the phenomena of actions that are in accordance with it, all fulfill desires, bring suffering, joy, pleasure, and satisfaction. What is the reason for that? Like this, the view is virtuous. The Dharma of a physician should not be proclaimed, one should not dwell with negligence, one should not increase the world, one should not desire those with wrong views. The right view of worldly people, wherever it exists, that person, even through thousands of lifetimes, will not fall into evil destinies. Thus it is said. Therefore, as it is said, the village chief, I from now on, and so on. The Blessed One, together with a large Sangha of monks, one hundred and thirty-three monks, and a thousand lay devotees, and about five hundred beggars, traveled from village to village, from city to city, and from region to region, and arrived at Nalanda. He stayed in the Amra grove of Nalanda. At that time, there was a great famine, difficult to overcome, and it was difficult for beggars to obtain food. Then, a naked ascetic lay devotee village chief, holding a sword in his hand, went near to where the naked ascetics were. Having approached, he bowed his head at the feet of the naked ascetics and sat to one side. While sitting to one side, the naked ascetics said to that village chief holding a sword: Village chief, why do you ask questions to the ascetic Gautama, who is like an iron sheath with two holes?

Is it possible to engage in arguments that can neither be predicted nor said to be unpredictable? Holy ones, if the ascetic Gautama, like an iron cage with two holes on both sides, asks a question, how can one engage in arguments that can neither be predicted nor said to be unpredictable? Village chief, go to where the ascetic Gautama is, approach him, and say this: Ascetic Gautama, do you contemplate the origin of families, or do you speak of the praises of families? If he says no, then say this: In that case, what is the difference between you, Gautama, and all the children born later? If he says yes, then say this: Ascetic Gautama, now that there is a great famine, difficult to overcome, and beggars find it difficult to obtain food, you, along with a large monastic community of monks, one hundred and thirty-five monks, and a thousand lay followers, and about five hundred beggars, wander from village to village, from city to city, from region to region, and Gautama, like hail, attacks families, causing damage and destroying the people of the families. Gautama, this is unreasonable, this is different, this is inappropriate. If the village chief says this, and if the ascetic Gautama, like an iron cage with holes on both sides, asks a question, it will turn into an argument that can neither be predicted nor said to be unpredictable. Holy ones, it is possible. Then, the naked listener, the village chief holding a sword, urged by the naked ones, went to where Nālandā was, approached where the Blessed One was, engaged in various pleasant and joyful conversations with the Blessed One, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the village chief holding a sword said this to the Blessed One: Gautama, do you contemplate the origin of families, or do you speak of the praises of families? Village chief, the Tathagata has long since ceased to contemplate the origin of families.

Where are you doing and praising the families? Gautama, are you now, when the great famine is difficult to overcome and beggars find it difficult to obtain food, wandering with many monks, one hundred and thirty-three monks, one thousand laymen, about five hundred beggars, from village to village, from city to city, from region to region, harming families like hail? Destroying the prosperity of families? Gautama, this is unreasonable, this is different, this is inappropriate. Village chief, I have been recalling ninety-one kalpas from now on, and I have not perceived any unease, fear, or harm in any family for the sake of giving food offerings. Village chief, however, have you seen? Those families are wealthy, possessing much wealth, extremely abundant utensils, a large amount of paternal property, wealth, gold, rice, granaries, cellars, and many family members, many male and female servants and laborers, relatives and friends, and many close relationships. Those arise from long-term virtue, from truth, from near quiescence. Village chief, these eight are the causes of families declining and not being able to revive. Which eight? Village chief, the king is the one who destroys families. Thieves, fire, water, treasures, the end of business, false accusations due to displeasure, and any woman who impoverishes the family and family members with meaningless things and does not give help. Village chief, I have also pointed out these eight impermanent things. Village chief, some people abandon these eight causes and conditions and say this: 'The ascetic Gautama thinks of harming families, not being compassionate.' Then, his words have not abandoned this view, have not abandoned desire, hatred, and evil thoughts, just as an arrow shot downwards, after the body is destroyed and dies, he will fall into evil realms and evil destinies, and be born into the hells of sentient beings. After thus speaking, village chief.
