Having abandoned worldly greed in the mind, one dwells frequently without greed, and purifies greed in the mind. Abandoning malice, drowsiness, duality, excitement, regret. Abandoning worldly doubt, transcending hesitation, transcending doubt. Having no doubt about virtuous dharmas, and purifying the mind from doubt. Therefore, having abandoned the five obscurations that afflict the mind, weaken wisdom, belong to the side of obstacles, and do not achieve Nirvana, from being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, up to achieving and abiding in the fourth dhyana. Cutting the root with nihilistic views. As for this, who completely cuts off the roots of virtue, how does one cut them off, and in what way does one completely cut them off? Answer: Some people, without regard for their parents, take their lives and do not even generate a trace of regret, while others, without regard for their parents, take their lives and generate a small amount of regret. Then, those who say there are no ascetics or wanderers in the world, those who speak of causelessness, they assert that good and bad actions have been destroyed, cut off, and no longer exist. Approaching them, they ask this question: What is good? What is blameworthy? What is blameless? What actions will become good and not become evil? When asked, they do not generate regret that has not arisen, and they quickly eliminate regret that has already arisen. They say this: Killing is devoid of fruit, without fruit, meaningless, without birth, without taste, without praise. Killing has no ripening fruit. Taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle talk, greed, malice, and wrong view are devoid of fruit, without fruit, meaningless, without birth, without taste, without praise. There is no wrong view, nor is there a fruit of wrong view.

Saying there is no ripened fruit, he desires and endures it, and fully manifests it. When he desires and endures it, and manifests it, just by this, he is called one who has entered the wrong path, that is, having wrong views, wrong thoughts, wrong karmic ends, wrong livelihood, and wrong samadhi. By entering such a wrong path, the three kinds of misconduct increase, become intense, and multiply. The three kinds of good conduct decrease, become weak, and become light. The three roots of non-virtue increase, become intense, and suffering multiplies. The three roots of virtue decrease, become weak, become light, and become intermittent. The ten paths of non-virtuous actions manifestly increase, become intense, dense, and multiply. The ten paths of virtuous actions become subtle, weak, and intermittent. The left path increases, becomes intense, dense, and multiplies. The right path decreases, becomes weak, light, and intermittent. He becomes one who frequently kills, desires to take what is not given, commits adultery, speaks falsely, speaks divisively, speaks harshly, speaks frivolously, is greedy, malicious, and has wrong views. Like this, due to being untamed, he dwells much, and due to being unguarded, he dwells much. Occasionally, virtuous thoughts and mental phenomena arise. Then again, he mostly engages in non-virtue, mostly the left path. Just as in late summer, when autumn arrives, a great lightning flash occurs, illuminating slightly, showing an image, and then quickly disappearing, so too, due to being untamed and unguarded, he dwells many times. Once in a hundred times, virtuous thoughts and mental phenomena arise, and then again he engages in non-virtue, mostly the left path. For example, a person oppressed by heat, afflicted by heat, thirsty, tired, and afflicted by heat
