Thus, the sin of speech, having committed the four types of non-virtuous actions, accumulated and nearly accumulated, will bring about maturation that is unpleasant and painful. Monks, how are the three types of mental actions committed, accumulated, and nearly accumulated, the maturation of which is painful and non-virtuous? Some become greedy, with strong attachment to desires. They develop greed for the possessions of others, the wealth of others, and the necessities of others, thinking, 'What if those things of others were to become mine?' They do not turn away from greed. Some become malicious, contemplating with a cruel mind, thinking, 'May you sentient beings decline and fail, and may you obtain meaningless poverty!' They do not turn away from malice. Some become those with wrong views. With their inverted views, they see and speak as follows: 'There is no giving, no offering, no good conduct, no bad conduct. There is no maturation of the fruits of good and bad conduct. There is no this world, no other world, no father, no mother. There are no beings who arise spontaneously. In the world, there are no Arhats who have gone rightly and awakened rightly, who, with their own realization, have fully and manifestly witnessed the Dharma nature that sees this world and the other world. My birth is exhausted, the practice of celibacy has been followed, what needed to be done has been done, and there is nothing else to know beyond this existence.' They do not turn away from such wrong views. Monks, thus the sin of mind, having committed the three types of non-virtuous actions, accumulated and nearly accumulated, will bring about maturation that is unpleasant and painful. Monks, in that case, a noble disciple abandons the non-virtuous qualities of body and cultivates the virtuous qualities of body. They abandon the non-virtuous qualities of speech and mind and cultivate the virtuous qualities of speech and mind. They cultivate only a mind of loving-kindness, without enmity, without harm, expansive, pervading all, immeasurable, in one direction.

Having pervaded, he dwells completely and perfectly. Likewise, the second, likewise, the third, likewise, the fourth, in all of this world above, below, and to the sides, only a mind of loving-kindness, without equal, without harm, vast, gone everywhere, immeasurable, well cultivated, having pervaded, he dwells completely and perfectly. He thinks thus: "Formerly, my mind was not cultivated and became small, therefore I should cultivate an immeasurable and well-cultivated mind." Monks, it is impossible for a noble disciple who possesses hearing to have a reckless mind, he will not fall, he will not abide, and he will not be counted. Monks, even if boys and girls cultivate the samadhi of loving-kindness, will they still commit sinful and unwholesome deeds, such as deeds of body, speech, and mind, and draw near to them? Will they still show what is meaningless, unprofitable, and painful for a long time? No, venerable ones. Monks, well done! Well done! Monks, whether a man or a woman, a householder or a renunciate, should cultivate the samadhi of loving-kindness. Monks, why is that? Men and women, householders and renunciates, will also abandon this body and go to another world. Monks, following the mind, relying on the mind, bound by the mind, they proceed relying on the mind. Monks, some say this: "All the sinful and unwholesome deeds that my body has done and accumulated in the past will be experienced in this life, and may they not be experienced in other births and times." Monks, if one possesses the samadhi of loving-kindness in this way, he will abide without turning back and realize the unsurpassed Dharma individually. Therefore, one who possesses the noble disciple abandons the sinful and unwholesome deeds of the body and cultivates the wholesome deeds of the body. He abandons the sinful and unwholesome deeds of speech and mind and cultivates the wholesome deeds of speech and mind. That which is called being together with a mind of compassion, joy, and equanimity, and so on, as before, monks.

Monks, if one possesses such equanimity and concentration, one will abide in non-retrogression and realize the supreme Dharma, as it is said. Monks, there are three types of killing, and the origin of this is in Shravasti. Monks, there are three types of killing: arising from greed, arising from hatred, and arising from delusion. Monks, there are three types of taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, greed, hatred, and wrong view: arising from greed, arising from hatred, and arising from wrong view. Monks, there are three types of abandoning killing: arising from non-attachment, arising from non-hatred, and arising from non-delusion. Monks, there are three types of abstaining from taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, non-greed, non-hatred, and non-wrong view: arising from non-attachment, arising from non-hatred, and arising from non-delusion, so it is said. As the Blessed One also said: "With life, warmth, and consciousness." Etc., the Blessed One was dwelling in a tumultuous place, by the bank of the Ganges River. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, just as the current of the Ganges River carries away a great mass of foam, and a person with eyes sees it, contemplates it, and examines it properly. Having seen and contemplated it, when examined properly, it appears to be unreal, and appears to be a deceptive accumulation of falsehood. Why is that? Because the foam is washed away and has no essence whatsoever. Monks, likewise, any form whatsoever, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or superior, distant or near, these are seen by the monk, contemplated as he thinks, and examined properly. Having seen and contemplated it, he examines it properly.
