Excellent! Extremely excellent! Venerable one, I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha! Please accept me as a lay follower. From this moment until the end of my life, I will abandon killing, take refuge, and have unwavering faith. Thus it is said. This has also been written in the second chapter of the Abhidharmakosha, from the words "death due to the exhaustion of life," and so on. Furthermore, it is said in the Sutra that wherever the word "Sangha" appears, one should also take refuge. From the Four Touches Sutra, this passage is extracted: Then, the Blessed One admonished the two merchants, Gaga and Sangpo, saying: You should take refuge in the Buddha! Take refuge in the Dharma! In the future, the word "Sangha" will appear, and you should also take refuge! They said: Venerable one, so it is. I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! In the future, the word "Sangha" will appear, and I also take refuge. Thus it is said. It is said in the treatise, as in the Entering Wisdom Treatise, it is said, whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, where does he take refuge? That is, he takes refuge in the non-learning Dharma that corresponds to what Dharma is called Buddha, designated, named, and spoken of, that is, the Dharma that makes one a Buddha. Thus it is said. As the Blessed One said, as in the fourth gate of the Vinaya Minor Matters, in the fifth verse of the Vinaya, the aspect of miraculous power is extracted in this way. Venerable one, how is a patient? As it is said in the fourth verse of the Vinaya of the fourth gate of the Vinaya Minor Matters: The venerable Ananda asked the Blessed One: Venerable one, how does the Blessed One care for the sick, and how does he heal the sick? Ananda, how should one care for the sick comfortably, except for obstacles of nature? Thus it is said. The so-called Shakya insiders come from the tenth verse of the Vinaya of the first gate of the Vinaya Pearl. It is said therein that whoever is associated with these four intoxicating dharmas should be known as a child, foolish, unclear, and not a great person. What are the four? Not abandoning killing, and

Not taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct, and not abandoning intoxicating substances such as grain alcohol and concocted alcohol. Possessing these four qualities is what is called a wise, clear, and noble person. What are the four? Abandoning the taking of life and refraining from taking life; not taking what is not given; refraining from sexual misconduct; and refraining from grain alcohol and concocted alcohol, which are places of recklessness. The basis of the story is in Shravasti. Possessing these four qualities is what is called a foolish child, an ignorant person, an unclear person, an unwise person, and not a noble person, namely, not abandoning lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter. Possessing these four qualities is a wise, clear, and noble person. What are the four? Abandoning lying; abandoning divisive speech; abandoning harsh speech; and abandoning idle chatter. Thus it was said. Abstaining from the misconduct of body and speech, like killing and divisive speech, drinking intoxicating substances is also called misconduct. What did the Bhagavan say? From the Vinaya's section on ordination, it is extracted as follows: Venerable one, listen! These four are said by the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, who knows and sees, to be the transgressions of a fully ordained monk who has gone forth. If any of these cause a fall, then the monk becomes fallen, is not a monk, is not a renunciate, is not a son of the Shakya, the essence of the monk is lost and destroyed, the essence of the renunciate is destroyed and fallen, defeated and irreparable. For example, if the head of a palm tree is cut off, it cannot be healed, it cannot turn green again, and it cannot grow and expand. Similarly, if a monk drinks such an inherently intoxicating substance, then he is not a monk, is not a renunciate, is not a son of the Shakya, the essence of the monk is lost and destroyed, his essence of renunciate is destroyed and fallen, defeated and irreparable.

Having spoken. These are stated from the Vinaya, and in the first Parajika of the Vibhaga, it is said thus: Furthermore, which Bhikshu, from 'There are four types of Bhikshu': Name Bhikshu, Pretender Bhikshu, Begging therefore Bhikshu, and Bhikshu who has destroyed afflictions. What is a Name Bhikshu? Whoever is called by name and designation, and by words, appellations, expressions, and terms is called Bhikshu, the kind of Bhikshu, generally called Bhikshu, this is called Name Bhikshu. What is a Pretender Bhikshu? One who is not a Bhikshu but pretends to be a Bhikshu, abiding like a thief but pretending to be a Bhikshu, this is called a Pretender Bhikshu. What is a Begging therefore Bhikshu? Whoever begs in accordance with the Dharma and lives by it, this is called Begging therefore Bhikshu. What is a Bhikshu who has destroyed afflictions? Whoever has abandoned and completely understood all the defilements with outflows, and all that may cause disease and suffering to arise, and future birth, old age, sickness, and death, and has cut them off from the root, like cutting off the top of a palm tree, making it of a nature that does not give rise to future rebirth, this is called Bhikshu because of destroying afflictions. In this regard, it should be understood as a Bhikshu who has taken full ordination through petition and four karmas. It is also said that one should abide in non-anger. The enjoyer of the Sangha, not even giving a single morsel, the origin of this story is in Shravasti. The Sravakas of the heretics, striving to do things for the benefit of the Sangha, were seen and known by the householder Anathapindika, who thought: If the Sravakas of the heretics are striving to do things for the benefit of the Sangha, doing heretical deeds against the Dharma, I will also have many people make offerings to the Sangha. Then, the householder Anathapindika went to where the Bhagavan was, approached, bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head, and then said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, please know.
