Coming from the pool, bathing, drinking, and leaving, people would see it and say, 'Alas, elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' The elephant named Segata, belonging to the king of Kosala, the subduer of armies, is a great elephant king. Accompanied by the sounds of various musical instruments, coming from the eastern pool, bathing, drinking, and leaving, people would say, 'Alas, elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' The venerable Charyaka saw this and said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable, the elephant named Segata, belonging to the king of Kosala, the subduer of armies, ... elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' Venerable, do people only see a single, large-bodied elephant and say, 'Elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' Or do they say something else as well?' The Blessed One said, 'Charyaka, when people see a large-bodied elephant, they say, 'Alas, elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' Horses, bull kings, buffaloes, goats, sheep, snakes, men, and large piles of wood, when people see them, they also say, 'Alas, elephant, elephant, elephant, very good!' However, Charyaka, in the world with gods, with demons, with Brahmas, with ascetics and Brahmins, in the world of gods and humans, one who does not commit evil deeds of body, speech, and mind, that is called an elephant.'

…Paspo spoke thus. The Blessed One said, "Kashyapa, please praise!" At that time, the venerable Kashyapa spoke in verses like this: The perfect Buddha who has become a man, is tamed and dwells in equanimity, practices the path of pure conduct, and his mind is very peaceful. To all the dharmas that have reached the other shore, whoever will pay homage, even the gods pay homage, and I, the Arhat, have attained in this way. Completely transcending all bonds, having reached the other shore of nirvana, like a golden mountain freed from stone, one will surely be liberated from all desires. The sound of the perfect Buddha is as loud as the sun. Among the elephants, truth is supreme. Well praised and not harmful. The two front feet of the elephant are asceticism and pure conduct. The two hind feet of the elephant are faith and equanimity. The great tusks of the elephant are mindfulness, throat, and wisdom head. The thought of dharma is the arm, discrimination is the back, truth is the ribs, the abdomen is dharma, breathing in and out is meditation, the inner self is dwelling in equanimity, the elephant dwells in equanimity even when walking, dwells in equanimity even when standing, the elephant dwells in equanimity even when sleeping, and dwells in equanimity even when awake. The elephant in all places is completely subdued by the elephant. Completely abandoning faults, one acts without fault. The elephant acts, acts and acts completely. It is not without observation. After completely abandoning accumulation, one enjoys food and clothing. In all places where others give, one enjoys what is given with faith. Completely severing all bonds, completely abandoning all subtle increases. Having renounced from anything, one walks without dependence. Like the lovely full moon, the beautiful white lotus, although born from water, is not stained by water. Similarly, the perfect Buddha is born in the world, but is not stained by the faults of the world, like a lotus growing in mud. Just as when a fire burns, it becomes extinguished when it leaves the wood. Completely pacified and determined to be liberated, it is called nirvana. These knowable meanings are understood through the explanation of sound. Elephant

Called the elephant king. Clearly shown, it becomes understandable. Abandoning desire, abandoning hatred. Abandoning ignorance, without defilements. Completely abandoning the aggregates is called the elephant king's passing into nirvana. Thus it is said. Because there is no suffering in the body, Taking the pure precepts is happiness. Sleeping is also happiness, And upon awakening, it will also increase. Thus it is said. Whatever the Blessed One said, that is, for twelve years before faults occurred in the teachings of the Blessed One Shakyamuni, the Pratimoksha Sutra was taught to the Sangha of monks in three verses: Do no evil, Practice all good. Subdue your own mind, This is the teaching of all Buddhas. Restraint of body is good, Restraint of speech is good. Restraint of mind is good, Restraint is good in all things. A monk who is restrained in everything Will be liberated from all suffering. Guarding speech, well restraining the mind, Not doing any unwholesome deeds of the body, Diligently training in these three paths of action, One will realize the path spoken by the sages. Thus it is said. The eye faculty dwells restrained by discipline, it is said. How, for example, is it like the third sutra of the collection of the aggregate of morality, and what is extracted from it? That is, it is truly endowed with this aggregate of morality, and dwells guarding the doors of the senses and the mind. Guarded by mindfulness, Guarded very much by mindfulness, Guarded exceedingly by mindfulness, He lives without distraction. Having seen forms with the eye, he does not grasp at characteristics, nor does he grasp at secondary characteristics, and especially the eye faculty dwells restrained by discipline, and the sinful, unwholesome dharmas, worldly covetousness and malice and displeasure, the mind is freed from defilements, and from these he guards the mind, and the eye faculty is guarded, and the eye faculty dwells restrained by discipline. The ear hears sounds, The nose smells odors, The tongue tastes flavors, The body touches tangibles, The mind knows dharmas, from not grasping at characteristics, not grasping at secondary characteristics, and especially the doors of the senses dwell restrained by discipline. Sinful, unwholesome dharmas, worldly covetousness
