So, what are the dharmas that possess defilements? It should be understood from the first verse contained in the collection of the six sense bases. The seventh verse of that collection has already been written in the first place of the Abhidharmakosha, which says, "This itself, which possesses defilements, is of three kinds." In the sutra, it says, why is this particularly emphasized? This topic occurred in Shravasti. Monks, these six are the chaff of the mind and the basis of disputes. Which six? Monks, form, possessing defilements, associated with grasping, is the chaff of the mind and the basis of disputes. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma, possessing defilements, associated with grasping, are the chaff of the mind and the basis of disputes. Thus spoke the Buddha. Named "A monk possessing discipline, possessing virtuous dharmas." The Blessed One was dwelling at the root of a sala tree in a auspicious grass hut for the purpose of the summer retreat. At that time, many monks were dwelling near the Blessed One, having entered retreat in monasteries for the purpose of the summer retreat. Then, those many monks, after three months of summer retreat, made robes and blessed them, and carrying robes and bowls, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, those many monks said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, we have completed the summer retreat, may we break the boundaries? Monks, do not break the boundaries. Why is that? Monks, as long as you remain within the boundaries, the merit of the donors will only increase, and merit will only grow more abundant. Monks, these four are the common cause of merit, the common cause of virtue, and the donors should expect common happiness. Which four? Whichever monastery has monks who are disciplined, possess virtuous dharmas, have immeasurable samadhi, and realize it with their bodies, fully enjoying it, then from that basis, the donor will have the common cause of immeasurable merit, and the common cause of virtue, and common happiness.

It should be recognized that it is not. Having physically realized the immeasurable and the perfection of mental concentration, if one enjoys robes, alms, bedding, and cushions, then one should expect that the donor will have an immeasurable cause of merit, a cause of virtue, and common happiness from that. Monks, the measure of the merit of a donor who possesses these four causes of merit, causes of virtue, and common happiness is such that one cannot say, 'Only this much is the result of merit, only this much is the ripening of the result of merit,' because the merit is abundant, and it is otherwise counted as a great accumulation of merit. For example, these four great rivers mix and flow into the great ocean, such as the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Marayu, and the Ajeravati, which are very large. One cannot measure how much water they have, or how many jars of water, or how many hundreds of jars of water, or how many thousands of jars of water, or how many hundreds of thousands of jars of water. One can only say that there is a lot of water and a great collection of water. Monks, likewise, the measure of merit of one who possesses these four causes of merit, causes of virtue, and common happiness cannot be measured. Otherwise, it is said to be abundant merit and is called a great accumulation of merit. Just as pure and pleasant entrances, a jewel-producing auspicious sea, and groups of people and mountain animals, the rivers on which they rely flow separately. Likewise, bedding, cushions, and other things, the stream of merit for the one who gives, flows like water into the ocean. Thus it was said. The place where the story took place was in Shravasti. There are eight kinds of worldly dharmas, namely: gain and no gain, fame and no fame, praise and blame, happiness and suffering. Thus it was said. For false views and false discriminations will arise, the place where the story took place was in Shravasti. Monks, ignorance comes first, the cause comes first, sin

Various non-virtuous dharmas arise and increase. Monks, from shamelessness and recklessness, wrong views arise. From wrong views, wrong thoughts arise, as well as the evils of wrong speech and wrong actions, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong concentration will increase. Wisdom and knowing shame and having embarrassment go before, and from the previous causes and conditions, various virtuous dharmas arise and increase. Monks, from knowing shame and having embarrassment, right views arise, and from right views, right thoughts arise, until right concentration is achieved. Thus, the noble disciple, endowed with hearing, truly endowed, and equally abiding, is said to have his mind liberated from desire, hatred, and ignorance. Thus, the noble disciple, whose mind is truly liberated, truly knows, from "My birth is exhausted" to "Beyond this, there is nothing more to know." Thus it is said. As it is said in the sutra, such as the elephant, etc., the Blessed One, dwelling together with the Venerable Ashvajit in the Deer Park, the eastern monastery of Shravasti, then the Blessed One arose from deep meditation, and called to the Venerable Ashvajit, saying, "Come, let us go to the eastern pond to bathe." Having heard what the Blessed One said, the Venerable Ashvajit replied, "Thus it is, Blessed One." Then, the monk Ashvajit followed the Blessed One and went near the eastern pond. Having arrived, they placed their robes on one side of the monastery and entered the eastern pond to bathe. Having bathed, they came out of the eastern pond, spread out a robe to dry their bodies, and sat down. At that time, the elephant of King Pasenadi of Kosala, named Seto, a great elephant king, accompanied by the sounds of various musical instruments, was going to the eastern po
