He spoke in verses: Among the two-legged, the royal race is the best, which has become the support of the lineage. Endowed with wisdom and feet, it is the most excellent among gods and men. Thus spoke the lord of a thousand Brahmas in verses: Whatever is so, is well spoken, and not badly spoken; it is good speech, and not bad speech. I also say this: Among the two-legged, the royal race is the best, which has become the support of the lineage. Endowed with wisdom and feet, it is the most excellent among gods and men. Thus I speak. When this category of Dharma was preached, the venerable abode, and the venerable Bharadvaja, without grasping, their minds were completely liberated from defilements. Kalpa, weapons, and inner, etc., and so on, in the third assembly, like the verses of the Vinaya, like the former disciplinarian reciting the sutra. The kalpa is brought to an end by three places, namely weapons, disease, and famine. These three are intermediate kalpas, namely the intermediate kalpa of weapons, the intermediate kalpa of disease, and the intermediate kalpa of famine. Destruction is of three kinds, namely destruction by fire, destruction by water, and destruction by wind. The peak of destruction is of three kinds, namely the gods of Clear Light, the gods of Extensive Virtue, and the gods of Great Fruit. When the world is destroyed by fire, then the gods of Clear Light become the peak of destruction. When the world is destroyed by water, then the gods of Extensive Virtue become the peak of destruction. When the world is destroyed by wind, then the gods of Great Fruit become the peak of destruction. As it is said in the sutra: The power of suffering has ceased. The occasion was in Shravasti. These five monks are the faculties, what are the five? Namely, the faculty of displeasure, the faculty of suffering, the faculty of pleasure, the faculty of happiness, and the faculty of equanimity. Monk! The faculty of displeasure is arising, and the faculty of pleasure is arising, thus he truly knows. That also has a cause, also has a condition, also has an appearance, also has a manifestation, also has a creation, thus truly

Fully understands. He thinks thus: By what cause and what condition does the unpleasant sense-faculty arise, is that cause and that condition permanent or impermanent? Again, he thinks thus: What is the cause that gives rise to the unpleasant sense-faculty, and what is the cause and condition that gives rise to the unpleasant, how can those be permanent? He regards the arising and occurring of the unpleasant sense-faculty as impermanent and abides. He observes with effort, he observes with cessation, and he observes and abides with individual complete pacification. Therefore, his mind is drawn near. Where does this unpleasant sense-faculty arise and occur, completely cease, completely be exhausted, and come to an end? Where will his mind be gathered? Where will his unpleasant sense-faculty completely cease? This is the state of a monk from being separated from desire to practicing and abiding in the first dhyana. Here his mind is drawn near, and here his unpleasant sense-faculty is completely ceased, completely exhausted, and comes to an end. This is called a monk who is skilled and more diligent in the definite emergence of the unpleasant sense-faculty. O monks, the root of suffering is arising, and the root of suffering is appearing, and he fully understands it as it really is. It is also with cause, with condition, with aspect, and with fabrication, and he fully understands it as it really is. He thinks thus: By what cause and what condition does the root of suffering arise, is that cause and that condition permanent or impermanent? He thinks thus: What is the cause of the arising of the root of suffering, and what is the cause and condition of the arising of the root of suffering, how can those be regarded as permanent? He regards the arising and occurring of the root of suffering as impermanent and abides. He observes with effort,

He dwells contemplating decay, contemplating separate cessation, and his mind draws near to it. Whatever suffering arises and comes into being, it will completely cease without remainder, completely be exhausted without remainder, and be touched. Where does his mind draw near, and where does this root of suffering completely cease without remainder? Here, the monk, after the near pacification of investigation and analysis, dwells having accomplished the second dhyana. Here his mind draws near, and here this root of suffering completely ceases without remainder, completely is exhausted without remainder, and is touched. This, O monks, is said to be skilled and exceedingly skilled in the emergence of the root of suffering. Monks, pleasure is born, and pleasure arises, and he knows it well as it really is. It also has a cause, has a condition, has an aspect, and has a manifestation, and he knows it well as it really is. He thinks to himself: What is the cause and what is the condition that causes pleasure to arise? From the name, it should be expanded like the root of suffering. Where will his mind be gathered, and where will the pleasure that arises completely cease without remainder, completely be exhausted without remainder, and be touched? Here, the monk, after being detached from desire from joy, dwells having accomplished the third dhyana. Here his mind draws near, and here the pleasure that arises completely ceases without remainder, completely is exhausted without remainder, and is touched. Monks, this is said to be skilled and extremely skilled in the emergence of pleasure. Monks, the arising and arising of pleasure, etc., should be well known as they really are, and should be spoken of like the root of suffering. Where does his mind draw near, and where does this root of suffering completely cease without remainder, completely be exhausted without remainder, and touch
