I go for refuge to the Buddha. And going for refuge to the Dharma and the Sangha, and abiding having taken up the basis of training properly, then the fruit of giving is greater than that. Even better than that, spreading the mind together with loving-kindness, the householder who, like a great sala tree, gives such an essential gift to the Brahmins of the time, and who gives to a hundred ascetics who are free from desire from external desires, and who gives to a hundred who have entered in order to realize the fruit of stream-entry, and who gives to a hundred stream-enterers, and who gives to a hundred who have entered in order to realize the fruit of once-returning, and who gives to a hundred once-returners, and who gives to a hundred who have entered in order to realize the fruit of non-returning, and who gives to a hundred non-returners, and who gives to a hundred who have entered in order to realize the fruit of Arhatship, and who gives to a hundred Arhats, and who offers a park to the Sangha of monks of the four directions, and who establishes a temple there, and who offers bedding and cushions, such as: beds and stools and cushions and platforms, and who offers square cushions, and who in that temple offers a continuous livelihood that is suitable for the monks, and who goes for refuge to the Buddha, and goes for refuge to the Dharma and the Sangha, and abides having properly taken up the basis of training, and who, with a mind of loving-kindness, without malice, without harm.

Do you wish to abide long? Monks, even these sun and moon, so great in magical power and might, do not know the light of the Thirty-three (Trāyastriṃśa). However, the Thirty-three themselves know the light, radiance, or appearance. When a divine being is subject to death, five signs of death appear beforehand: his clothes become worn out, his flower garlands that were not worn out become worn out, an unpleasant odor arises from his body, dust arises from both armpits, and the divine being subject to death is not pleased with his own seat. Those gods of the Thirty-three, knowing that the divine being is subject to death, make a request three times: Friend, go to a good destination! Having gone to a good destination, may you obtain a good gain! Having obtained a good gain, may you abide well in the Buddha's teachings! They make this request three times. Then, another monk rises from his seat, arranges his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together in the direction of the Blessed One, says: Venerable sir, by what measure is the going to a good destination of the gods of the Thirty-three reckoned? By what measure does it go into the count of having well obtained what is to be obtained? By what measure does it go into the count of good abiding? Monk, the going to a good destination of the gods of the Thirty-three is to become a human being. When one becomes a human being and obtains faith in the Dharma and Discipline known by the Thus-Gone One, that goes into the count of the gods' good gain. That faith increases, takes root, and is established, and is not stolen by the world with its virtuous practitioners, Brahmins, gods, demons, and Brahma, that goes into the count of the gods of the Thirty-three's good abiding. Monks, however, humans have short lives, while the gods have long lives. What is a hundred years for humans is one day and night for the gods of the Thirty-three. Thirty of those days and nights are one month, and twelve months are one year. A thousand divine years is the lifespan of the gods of the Thirty-three. Which divine son, another divine son of

When many retinues are gathered together, if a certain deva's lifespan is exhausted and merit is exhausted, they fall from their abode and die, being reborn in a place with the same fate as humans. Growing up and with fully matured faculties, they make good use of their bodily actions, make good use of their speech and mental actions, and are reborn among the devas in the happy realms and heavens. Bhikshus, until that deva son is reborn in his own empty abode, the retinue of devas will not rise from their seats. Such discriminations consider that humans have short lifespans and devas have long lifespans. To that, one should say this: When the lifespan of which deva is exhausted, when dying and transmigrating from the race of devas, friend, may you go to have the same fate with the happy-going humans. Having become a human, may you realize and find faith in the Tathagata. May that faith be constant, take root and abide, may it not be stolen for as long as you live, may you thoroughly understand the sacred Dharma, abandon evil deeds of the body, abandon evil deeds of speech, abandon evil deeds of mind, and be immeasurably superior. Doing good with the body, doing good with speech, doing good with the mind, and also, may you rely on the sacred Dharma, practice pure conduct. The devas make prayers to the devas three times. Dying and transmigrating from humans, again as before. Thus it was spoken. The teaching of the signs of delusion in the Sutra is not summarized here. In the teaching called "Three Aggregates," from the third collection, the sixth, the verses of the summary called "virtues, faults, and essence," are recited as follows: What is truly certain? The basis of the discussion is in Shravasti. Bhikshus, the very nature of what is wrong and the path to what is wrong should be taught. The very nature of what is right and the path to what is right should be taught. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. What is the very nature of what is wrong? It is hell, pretas, and animals, which are the bad realms, bad destinies, and places of falling. What is the path to what is wrong? It is wrong view, wrong thought, and wrong action.
