In the concluding verses, it says, "Unpleasant and pleasant, and equanimity, there are always six." Just as it is written in the first chapter of the Abhidharmakosha, "The eye sees forms." Regarding "The Buddha's teachings transform into thirty-six," in the second chapter of the Samgrahavibhanga Sutra, it is said thus: "These thirty-six teachings of the Buddha should be touched in the inner nature." What I have said is explained slightly more extensively. What are the thirty-six teachings of the Buddha? There are six pleasant feelings based on attachment, six pleasant feelings based on renunciation, six unpleasant feelings based on attachment, six unpleasant feelings based on renunciation, six neutral feelings based on attachment, and six neutral feelings based on renunciation. What are the six pleasant feelings based on attachment? Monks, relying on forms that can be perceived by the eye, pleasant feelings will arise, and those pleasant feelings are also of two types: based on attachment and based on renunciation. What are the pleasant feelings based on attachment? Relying on forms that can be perceived by the eye, joy, suffering, pleasantness arise, being united with desire, generating joy, obtaining what has not been obtained, recalling what was previously obtained, and pleasant feelings arise. Such is called pleasant feelings based on attachment. What are the pleasant feelings based on renunciation? Recognizing that form is impermanent, free from desire, completely changing, ceasing, disappearing, and pacified, recognizing that all forms that have appeared in the past and present are impermanent, suffering, and of a completely changing nature, recognizing these and pleasant feelings arise. Such is called pleasant feelings based on renunciation. Relying on sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, and phenomena that can be perceived by the mind, pleasant feelings will arise, and those pleasant feelings are also of two types: based on attachment and based on renunciation. What are the pleasant feelings based on attachment? Relying on phenomena that can be perceived by the mind, desire, suffering, joy, pleasantness, being united with desire, generating joy, the unobtained

Such is the arising of joy by remembering what has been attained and previously attained, this is called joy based on attachment. What is joy based on definite emergence? Knowing that phenomena are impermanent, changing, free from desire, cessation, peaceful, and ceasing, and knowing that all phenomena that have occurred in the past and present are impermanent, suffering, and of the nature of change, and thus joy arises, this is called joy based on definite emergence. What are the six displeasures based on attachment? Relying on the form to be known by eye consciousness, displeasure will arise, and that displeasure is also of two kinds: based on attachment and based on definite emergence. What is displeasure based on attachment? The form perceived by eye consciousness is undesirable, unpleasant, displeasing, disagreeable, encompassed by undesirability, extreme joy does not arise, what has not been attained is attained, previously attained, and remembering what was previously desired, and being separated from, cut off from, not possessing, and of the nature of change, displeasure arises, this is called displeasure based on attachment. What is displeasure based on definite emergence? Knowing that forms are impermanent, changing, free from desire, cessation, peaceful, and ceasing, and knowing that all forms of the past and present are impermanent, suffering, and of the nature of change, and thus generating desire for supreme liberation, thinking when will I accomplish the supreme birth, when will I accomplish and abide in the birth of the noble ones, thus generating desire and striving for unsurpassed liberation, complete longing and joy arise, this is called displeasure based on definite emergence. Relying on the phenomena to be known by ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness, displeasure will arise, and that displeasure is also of two kinds: based on attachment and based on manifestation. What is displeasure based on attachment? The phenomena to be known by mind consciousness is undesirable.
