Then, one should neither be pleased with what that monk says, nor should one criticize it. Without being pleased or criticizing, one should listen attentively, correctly grasp the letters and words of the Dharma, and compare it with the Sutra Pitaka and examine the Vinaya. If it agrees with the Sutra Pitaka and upon examining the Vinaya, it accords with the Sutra Pitaka, appears in the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma-nature, then those monks should say to that monk: 'Venerable, many monks have correctly expounded the Dharma and the Vinaya. Venerable, you have well grasped this Dharma. Thus, when compared with the Sutra Pitaka and examined in the Vinaya, it accords with the Sutra Pitaka, appears in the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma-nature. This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's teaching.' It should be received in this way. Ananda, again, some other monks may come and say: 'Venerable ones, in such and such a place, many monks who uphold the Vinaya, uphold the Sutra Pitaka, and uphold the Matrika reside. Venerable ones, those many monks say: "This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's teaching," because I have personally witnessed and received it.'

If someone says, "This is clearly the doctrine of the Teacher that has been heard and received," then, one should neither rejoice nor criticize what that monk has said, but listen without joy or criticism. One should correctly grasp the letters and words of the Dharma, and conform to the sutras, and observe the Vinaya. If it conforms to the sutras and is observed in the Vinaya, it agrees with the sutras and corresponds to the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma nature, then the monks should say to that monk: "Venerable one, the elder monks have well explained the Dharma and the Vinaya, and the Venerable one has well held this Dharma, thus conforming to the sutras, and when observing the Vinaya, it agrees with the sutras and corresponds to the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma nature." The monks should say to that monk: "Venerable one, the elder monks have well explained the Dharma and the Vinaya, and the Venerable one has well held this Dharma, thus conforming to the sutras, and when observing the Vinaya, it agrees with the sutras and corresponds to the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma nature, this is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the teaching of the Teacher." Ananda, for the former, one should negate it as before, and the monk should examine and understand it well, and then abandon it, saying, "This is not the Dharma, this is not the Vinaya, this is not the teaching of the Teacher." The latter four are the great teachings, and the monks should examine and understand them well, and then uphold them, saying, "This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the teaching of the Teacher." Ananda, a monk should thus rely on the sutras and not dwell relying on individuals. Just as with the eye and form as conditions, eye consciousness arises, and the contact of the three together, and so forth, and how from the last of the second of the summary verses collected from the six sources, and from that sutra and that sutra, in the second chapter of the Abhidharmakosha, in the section establishing that cessation is not a substance, one should observe as it is written, "For the unconditioned, there are not those." For example, mindfulness, a limb of perfect enlightenment, accompanied by love, and so on.
