If asked, what is transformation? It is that, relying on the eye element, the coming together of eye consciousness arises as contact. However, the eye element does not arise from relying on the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. Nevertheless, relying on the eye element, the coming together of eye consciousness arises as contact. Relying on the coming together of eye consciousness as contact, feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. It is not that the coming together of eye consciousness arises from relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. Relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact, craving for feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. It is not that feeling arises from relying on craving for feeling as the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. However, relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact, craving for feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of eye consciousness as contact. Relying on the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind elements, the coming together of mind consciousness arises as contact. The mind element does not arise from relying on the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. Nevertheless, relying on the mind element, the coming together of mind consciousness arises as contact. Relying on the coming together of mind consciousness as contact, feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. It is not that the coming together of mind consciousness arises from relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. Relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact, craving for feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. It is not that feeling arises from relying on craving for feeling as the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. However, relying on feeling as the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact, craving for feeling arises from the condition of the coming together of mind consciousness as contact. Monks, in this way, relying on various elements, various contacts arise, and relying on various contacts, various feelings arise, and relying on various feelings, various cravings arise, thus he spoke. The Blessed One said, "One should rely on the Sutra Pitaka," so it is said. At the end of the sixth Sutra, from the Great Nirvana Sutra, it is recited as follows.

Thereafter, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Shapa tree grove north of the city of Universal Enjoyment. Then, the Blessed One summoned the Venerable Ananda and said: "Ananda, for that very reason, first and foremost, rely on the sutras, do not rely on individuals. Ananda, how should a bhikshu rely on the sutras and not rely on individuals? Ananda, here some bhikshus come and say, 'Venerable ones, this is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's teaching, because I have directly received it from the Blessed One.' Do not be pleased with what that bhikshu says, nor should you criticize it. Without being pleased or critical, listen attentively, correctly grasp the letters and words of the Dharma, and conform to the sutras and examine the Vinaya. If, when conforming to the sutras and examining the Vinaya, it does not accord with the sutras, does not appear in the Vinaya, and contradicts the Dharma-nature, then the bhikshu should say to that bhikshu: 'Venerable one, this Dharma was not spoken by the Blessed One. Venerable one, this Dharma is wrongly grasped by you. Thus, when this Dharma conforms to the sutras and is examined in the Vinaya, this Dharma does not accord with the sutras, does not appear in the Vinaya, and contradicts the Dharma-nature. This is not the Dharma, this is not the Vinaya, this is not the Teacher's teaching.' It should be abandoned. Ananda, if another bhikshu comes and says, 'Venerable ones, in such and such a place, many bhikshu sanghas dwell, together with the elders, possessing the Pratimoksha.' Venerable ones, from many bhikshu sanghas, they have directly heard and directly received, 'This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's teaching.'
