The basis for discussion about the fracture It was when I was in Shravasti. Monks, loving-kindness should be cultivated. If loving-kindness is fully relied upon, habituated, and practiced many times, it will become great in fruit and great in benefit. What is the cultivation of loving-kindness that has great fruit and great benefit? This is, monks, the mindfulness enlightenment factor that is especially connected with loving-kindness, abiding in solitude, abiding in detachment from desire, abiding in cessation, and transforming through complete abandonment. The perfect discrimination of dharma that is especially connected with loving-kindness, diligence, joy, perfect pliancy, concentration, and equanimity, the enlightenment factors, abiding in solitude, abiding in detachment from desire, abiding in cessation, and transforming through complete abandonment, are cultivated. In this way, the cultivation of loving-kindness that has great fruit and great benefit will occur. Just as with loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity should also be spoken of. Thus it was taught. Now, in which sutra is it said, "What is feeling?" and so forth, in the third chapter of verses of the summary that is perfectly consistent with this? In the Great Belly Sutra, it is said: Venerable Shariputra, what is feeling? What is thought? What is perception? What is consciousness? Are these dharmas mixed or unmixed? Are they distinguished, or completely distinguished? Are they different, or manifestly desired? Or are there different causes? Venerable Mahākauṣṭhila, what is feeling? What is thought? What is perception? What is consciousness? These dharmas are mixed, they are not unmixed. These dharmas are not distinguished, nor are they completely distinguished, nor are they different, nor are they manifestly desired, nor is it found to posit them as different causes. Why is that? Because whatever is experienced is thought. Whatever is thought is gathered and known. Whatever is gathered and known is consciousness. Therefore, these dharmas are mixed, they are not unmixed. These dharmas are not distinguished, nor are they completely distinguished, nor are they different, nor are they manifestly desired.

Or, it is not found to be something that can be considered a different cause. This is the source of the Mahagarbha Sutra. Because it is said that life and warmth are mixed together, this is also from the Mahagarbha Sutra, Shariputra, are these two dharmas, whatever life and warmth are, mixed or not mixed? Are these two dharmas distinguished, completely distinguished, individual, obviously wanted, or can it be found to be considered a different cause? Venerable Mahagarbha, whatever life and warmth are, these two dharmas are mixed, not unmixed. These two dharmas are not distinguished, completely distinguished, individual, obviously wanted, or cannot be found to be considered a different cause. What is the reason for that? Because where there is life, there is warmth, where there is warmth, there is life, where there is life, there it can be considered warmth, and warmth can also be felt. For example, Venerable Mahagarbha, just like relying on oil and wick, the lamp will light up, where there is flame, there is light, where there is light, there is flame, where there is flame, it can be considered light, and where there is light, there is also flame, similarly, Venerable Mahagarbha, where there is life, there is warmth, where there is warmth, there is life, where there is life, there it can be considered warmth, and warmth can also be felt. What is the reason for that? These two dharmas are mixed, not unmixed. These two dharmas are not distinguished, completely distinguished, individual, obviously wanted, or cannot be found to be considered a different cause. From that mind's near-going, various forms are also eighteen. It is said that these eighteen kinds of mind's near-going are the verses of the conclusion of the six places, the first water realm of the classification summary, and the two sutras of the six places, from the first position of the sutra treasury of the six places classification. "What is touched is of two kinds." In the explanation of the verses, monks, it is said that this person is of the six realms. Those who often exist with the antidote, the six that exist, refer to the summary of the six places.
