And the monk who has abandoned all associations, realized the state of perfect mind, and put an end to suffering, is called a monk." The Blessed One thus declared. In the sutra, it says, "I know thus, I see thus," and so on. The Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Garden of Radiance in Rajagriha. Then, the wandering mendicants of the Beu lineage came near to where the Blessed One was. Having come near, they exchanged various kinds of talk with the Blessed One that led to true happiness, joy, and true extreme joy, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the wandering mendicants of the Beu lineage said this to the Blessed One: "Hey, Gautama, if there is an opportunity to answer questions, I would like to ask some questions. Hey, Beu, who eats leftovers?" "Hey, Gautama, saying 'the world is eternal,' this alone is true, the rest is foolishness, do you view it this way, do you speak this way?" Beu, "Saying 'the world is eternal,' this alone is true, the rest is foolishness," I do not view it this way, nor do I speak this way. "Hey, Gautama, impermanent, and also permanent is permanent, impermanent is also impermanent, neither permanent nor impermanent, with end, and without end, both with end and without end, neither with end nor without end, life is the same as body, and life is different from body, the Tathagata exists after death, and does not exist, both exists and exists, does not exist and exists, neither exists nor does not exist, saying these are true, the rest is foolishness, do you view it this way, do you speak this way?" Beu, "Viewing it this way, saying the world is impermanent, and also permanent is permanent, impermanent is also impermanent, neither permanent nor impermanent, with end, and without end, both with end and without end, neither with end nor without end, life is the same as body, and life is different from body, the Tathagata exists after death, and does not exist, both exists and exists, does not exist and exists, neither exists nor does not exist," I do not view it this way, nor do I speak this way.

I do not say. Kasyapa, do you truly see these views with their faults, not accepting them in all respects? Kasyapa, the view that says, "The world is eternal, this alone is true, and others are foolish," this view is a view, a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a distraction of views, a creation of views, a complete combination of views. It is painful, it is harmful, it is nearly harmful, it completely burns, it does not manifest, it does not realize, it does not attain nirvana. The view that says, "The world is eternal, this alone is true, and others are foolish." To that, Kasyapa, the view that says, "impermanent," and "eternal is also eternal, impermanent is also impermanent," and "neither eternal nor impermanent," and "with end," and "without end," and "both with end and without end," and "neither with end nor without end," and "life is the body itself," and "life is different from the body," and "the Tathagata exists after death," and "does not exist," and "both exists and does not exist," and "neither exists nor does not exist," saying, "this alone is true, and others are foolish," this view is also a view, a thicket of views, a distraction of views, a creation of views, a practice of views, a complete combination of views. It is painful, it is harmful, it is nearly harmful, it completely burns, it does not manifest, it does not realize, it does not attain nirvana. Gautama, what is your view? Kasyapa, the Tathagata has abandoned what has become a view. However, what is it that the Tathagata has abandoned that has become a view? The Tathagata sees with correct wisdom as it is, "This is the noble truth of suffering," "This is the origin of suffering," "This is the cessation of suffering," "This is the path that leads to the cessation of suffering," and understands the truth of the noble truths.

Seeing things as they are with wisdom, I know and see it as it is. All craving, all views, all attachments, self-grasping, grasping at 'mine,' and all the subtle attachments of manifest clinging to the pride of 'I am,' are abandoned and fully known, and one has completely passed into nirvana without a shadow. Gautama, tell me, where will a renunciate whose mind is thus liberated go? Beo, therefore, prophesy and tell it as you endure. Beo, for example, do you know that there is a fire burning in front of you here? Gautama, I know that there is a fire burning. Beo, do you know that the fire has been extinguished? Gautama, I know that it has been extinguished. Beo, if someone comes and asks you, where did the fire that burned in front of you go, to the east, or to the south, or to the west and north? Beo, if someone asks this question, how will you prophesy? Gautama, if someone comes and asks me this, I will answer him like this: The fire that burned in front of me burned because it depended on grass, wood, branches, and leaves. When these are completely burned, the fuel is exhausted, and no new fuel is added, it will be extinguished without fuel. It did not go to the east, nor to the south, west, and north. Beo, likewise, the Tathagata has abandoned and fully knows the nature by which one clings to form, cutting off the root, like cutting off the head of a palm tree, becoming a dharma of non-arising in the future. By whatever nature one clings to feeling, by whatever nature one clings to perception, by whatever nature one clings to formation, by whatever nature one clings to consciousness, the Tathagata has purified and fully knows that very nature, cutting off the root, like cutting off the head of a palm tree, becoming a dharma of non-arising in the future. It did not go to the east, nor to the south, west, and north, which is called profound, vast, immeasurable, and countless nirvana. Gautama, may I give an example? Beo, when the time is right, then speak.
